Gainey in Habs uniform...

How did you react when you saw him walking in the hall in a Habs uniform?

I was never able to watch him play, as I was born in 1986, but seeing that made me realize that I missed so much of the Habs history that it's not even funny. Seeing him walk in that hall was like watching the born of a legend. I had tears in my eyes...that was quite something for me. Can't wait to see a video of that part. It's the most special thing that I've seen in a number retirement event...

i too never got to see him play (born in 85), and it put a nice big smile on my face.

For a second I crossed my fingers and hoped he would say he's suiting up tonight. lol!

For Us Old Timers

For those of us who watched him play, it was a beautiful sight.... I had a few tears in my eyes.

Quote from Ken Dryden in his book "the game"

"If I was a forward, I would want to be Bob Gainey"

smart man that Dryden!

Events like tonight are about building memories.
In your later years as you watch other events, suddenly a memory pops into your head, you turn to you child and say, I remember when they lifted Bob Gaineys sweater to the rafters.

As tonight in my case I remember Gainey flying down the left wing, hell bent of leather, then lifting the Stanly Cup. Like it was yesterday

Seeing Gainey in the uniform was classic. The comment he made about being more comfortable in a shirt and tie was funny.

On a side note, I'm gonna cry like a baby when Saku gets his jersey retired. I've already named my first-born Saku (boy or girl, the name is unisex)

Yea it was awesome. I liked that he put his skates on and just skates around the rink. Screw the confort, screw the nice and expensive shoes. He just went out with skates on and to me it was great.

Born in '71 so obviously saw him play. I missed the era when we were a great 2-way team. I wish that, soon, we will see a line like the Lemieux-Skrudland-McPhee line or even better.....the Gainey-Carbo-Nilan line.

Those offensive lines are great and we obviously need those. But you cannot forget how important those lines were to cup winning teams....

I've never seen him play either, and my hat, if I had one, would go off to Bob Gainey.

Look at him walk down the hall. His knees are out of line. His shoulders are out of line. So much abuse he's taken, that when you see him walk in shoes he limps. Yet, the man puts on the skates and his whole hockey gear and he takes a lap around the ice, being the proud hockey player he always was.

And I might add, he's got great fathering genetics. I WANT COLLEEN!!!!

I said it before the game: Bob was dressed to play, he should have played! They may still have lost, but there would have been more heart out there tonight...

BTW, it was great to see him in uniform!

I was at both ceremonies this year, IMO Robinson's was much better planned. I realize Gainey is a family man and doesn't like the spotlight, but I would have liked a hockey person to have spoken today ... where were the stories of him playing with 2 separated shoulders, with a dislocated shoulder, of the 1979 playoffs, where was the mention of Gainey being the only player to be carried on Forum ice ever, etc.. shrug.

The best part of the ceremony was watching him come out in skates and uniform. Even the 1986 team was so-so IMO, where was Patrick Roy? Where was Larry Robinson? Rick Green? etc..

Just to see Gainey walking and skating around made my night. The ole-oleing was stupid though, but we were there, clapping hands and cheering. At least I can say that I was there to see Gainey's number rising to the roof, not for another shutout by a French goalie.

I couldn't have said it better myself. As they showed close ups of Gainey I had a big lump in my throat and a few tears too.

Funny thin is my dad didn't know they were retiring Gaineys number. He saw him skating around in full equipment with the crowd cheering him. he called me to say "I know he's been a great GM, but this is too much..."

I was fortunate enough to attend the practice this morning thanks to one of the players. When I walked into the arena it was completely empty and dead quiet except for Bob. He was skating around on the ice with a few pucks...reminiscing about the old days (I'm guessing).

That really touched me just sitting there watching him for a good 10 minutes until he left for the dressing room.

When his jersey finally went up, I had tears in my eyes.

Way to go Bob. Thanks for everything.
