But Eklund reported he would waive it.

Seriously, take everything Eklund says and put it ass backwards and you have the truth.

Just looked at the Leafs board and there's some mighty spiteful (or just really really disappointed) people on there because he won't agree to be traded.

I'm convinced more than ever now that Sundin is a Hab fan working to destroy the franchise from the inside

On the one hand, we'll have to play a Leafs team with Mats still there to bail them out 2 times more this year.

On the other hand, the Leafs don't get picks and prospects to help in a rebuild.

I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad.

I personally don't get him wanting to play out 2 months of meaningless hockey, but hey, it's his choice.

I think retirement also maybe played a factor. He may want to retire at the end of the year and didn't want to do it in a Leaf's uniform.

Fletcher has to now work hard on trying to deal McCabe. Not being active on the trade deadline makes the entire Maple Leafs front office shake-up look like a joke.

What a joke ... He doesnt believe in Rentals... The leafs are not making the playoffs in all likelyhood .. they could get a lot for him.. help rebuild the team and then come back in the off season... He just took 2 starters off the leafs team for next year... He is being selfish. And I hate the leafs so much that I am happy he is staying put.. a trade would have been the biggest building block they could have started with!

congrats Mats..

Talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't....Sundin is going to take a ton of heat. It will be interesting to see if he re-signs with the Leafs next season, now that he's thrown a bit of a monkey wrench into their "re-building" plans.

and if the Leafs stink next year...which they will....will he be the focus of Leaf fans rage?

Can they? They've got NTCs as far as the eye can see.

When JFJ was handing out all those NTCs he probably didn't think it would be a problem. It's like a prison warden giving an inmate a clause that says he can stay once his term is up.

This deadline was like an amnesty at Alcatraz, but even the birdman is burning his wings and returning to his cell.

It's like I have mind control on the Leafs. This is too good to be true.

Not necessarily...Atlanta wants immediate help from that deal(NHL players) and I'm not sure how many teams are willing to do that. Lots of teams got burnt by rentals last year so I don't see a huge bidding war like Smyth Forsberg and co

Boston was not willing to move Kessel for him...maybe their best offer is Ryder plus Subban/Pacioretty/O'byrne plus a 1st.
Anaheim won't put Edmonton's 1st rounder on the table.

"I cannot leave my teammates and join another NHL Club at this time. I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision."
He gets my respect. I hate players who join the team in April, and win the cup, its just not the same as starting at the beginning.

I can't imagine them not making any moves.

Fletcher was brought in almost entirely to make trades and move the team in the direction of a re-build. Him not making any deals makes the MLSE "front office shakeup" look like a total joke.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Ryder, Subban, Paciorrety and O'Byrne plus a 1st is WAY too high a price for any UFA. Unless he signs here longer term, there's no way I'd do that deal.
