How do trade rumours leak?

I ve always been curious of this. Is it similar to politics? Do some players play better when they here chatter about their own trades? Do reporters just make up their own things? Wiretapping (hey its practically legal in the US now)?

Probably some reporters make it up. Maybe some GMs or people who work for teams leak it to media outlets to try start a bidding war for a player

They start just like this....

Rumor: Jokinen and for Marleau and Vlasic.

Then Eklund gets it up on his site.

Then people start quoting Eklunds blog, which rolls into something bigger. Eventually Ecklund qoutes multiple sources (posters) that this trade is a E3, which he reports on XM 204.

I'm almost positive Eklund gets his rumors off the HFBoards trade rumors board.

Well - truthfully, I would believe that there are teams that are definite buyers and teams that are definite sellers... Once those are established, you look at the players on those teams to determine which are being moved (UFAs at end of year, not getting playing time, etc etc etc)...

Then reporters key on these players in interviews both with the player themselves and then everyone involved in the organization. With reporters keying on them, the rest of the hockey world knows who is potentially available and runs scenario-based reports (newspaper, tv, radio) that speculate on what the value is on that player. This leads to the buying teams and its now speculation on what that team is willing to give up that is close to the speculated value.

In the end, there are a list of players that seem destined to be moved (see Jokinen yearly) and the media needs someone spectacular to make headlines so they run with it and the most amazing trade scenarios.

Also - the fan wants to know whats happening so we follow it until we are all on HFboards refreshing the screen constantly to find out who has been traded to and what the return is...

A lot of it is just educated guesses and speculation from hockey pundits. Then when one media source hears a name they hadn't heard before, they run with it. Of course, some people do have access to team officials and often times they draw their own conclusions based on the general information they acquire.

They're fabricated that's how. You need look no further than all the predictions made by the sites people refer to when talking about a particular rumor. The guys that run those sites (Eklund, 4th Period, Spector, etc.) make a living off of hack posters on sites like this desperate for some "what if?" scenario to talk about. They makes appearances on XM Radio for god's sake. There I've vented.

Although I think the Eklund theory can explain a lot of it too.

Alot of what has been said on here is true, alot is speculation or fabrication. But there are also times when teams will float an "idea" to a certain source to see what the feed back is. This happens in all major sports, not just the NHL.

I would suspect 1 in 20 rumors is planted by a team, hell probably 1 in 200 but it does happen.

The Legit rumours (of which there are few) most likely escape from lower ranking club officals who have some reason or another to know about the deal (Scouts being asked opinions on players, office staff looking at insurance/housing etc for new players that kind of thing)...... and who due to their relationships with a local beat reporter are happy to let info slip out.

Another spot I have seen rumors leak from is accountants. Really, seems far fetched, but if a team or player is looking at a possible move, they often times check out the tax implications, or atleast the agents do, then people talk and wala, you have an (e5)
