With Crosby being the top dog up front I expect they would want a franchise d-man in return.

Would Malkin for Erik Johnson+more work?

C'mon Avs, use the Foppa momentum to push you towards Malkin, we can then line up Malkin - Stastny - Sakic - Foppa and that's it, because the players required to get Malkin would completely deplete the team!

With that said, it wouldn't make sense to trade him now, maybe the offseason but it can surely wait for the playoffs to end.
The Pens are in a tricky situation with just too much talent.
I could see that western conference team being LA sending a big package including the likes of Johnson, Cammaleri and Blake.

What the hell would be a fair package for Malkin?
Like a Weber/Radulov as a starting point kinda thing?
I highly doubt they would trade him off, till after he did ask for 9-10 million and maybe not even then.
But really, what would you expect for a return on a second year player, thats tied for the league lead in scoring, while playing alot of the year behind crosby, but may want 9 million long term?

If they are gonna trade him due to cap issues, they will wait till the last possible moment (2009 offseason)

I don't think he's going to go anywhere and Kypreos is just talking to get some attention now since he knows everybody is going to be watching TSN tommorow.

If they're so worried about his next contract, why would they trade him when he still has another year left on his entry-level deal? I'm sure they'd get just as many suitors (i.e. 29 teams) if they wait until next deadline.

so we get rid of the points leader right now, when he has another year on his entry level contract right before the playoffs? wow that is the most retarted thing ive ever heard, unless we were getting kovalchuck and hossa in return

if it happens i will be completely shocked and probably burn ray shero's house down.

I highly doubt this is true.

But this is a guy who I could see Burke that 1st-rounder for.

jmo.
Lets wait for the 1st team to win the CUp with 2 $10M players on the team. Dont think it will happen.

It kind of makes sense from a financial point of view. Pittsburgh likely wont max out the cap so paying $20M to 2 players leaves a very mediocre lineup to win games. Ideally you want it like Ottawa, 3 good players making maybe $18M. That leaves you room to build a 2nd line with maybe $10-$12M.

so how do you pay Zetterberg, Malkin, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Rafalski etc?

10 mil
8 mil
7 mil
8 mil.
6 mil.

thats about 33 mil, and about 72% of the cap on 5 players.
good luck

Is this the new "Ryder, Halak and a 2nd"

If he is available, then Montreal has set their sights on a new impact player. Everything is available, except for Price, which, thankfully, pittsburgh doesn't need

After the Coyotes trade up to draft Bogosian or Schenn they'll send that d-man plus Turris and firsts in '09 and '10.

Then their cupboard would be bare.

Kypreos isn't a credible source. Crosby and Malkin can coexist on the same team, just as Heatley and Spezza got locked up at prime dollars in long term extensions. Remember that the Pens will have a new building and more revenue before long.

Crosby at 8.7M
Malkin at 9.5M
Done and done. If I were the Pens I would give Malkin the exact same deal Ovechkin just signed. Crosby is locked in for 5 more seasons. Get Malkin locked in for at least 10 years.

I think people need to come to the realization that Evgeny Malkin could be better than Crosby. Either way, they will be regarded as two of the top 3 players in the league for the next 10 years. You make room for both. You just need to find the capable wingers for them who will cost under 2M a year. As they used to say about Mario, a fire hydrant would get 20 goals on his wing.

No way Malkin gets traded right now. Pittsburgh will wait till he gets an offer sheet after next year.
