I can understand the logic in it, as when you look at Tampa Bay you see how investing a lot in two star centers can be very costly and a detriment to the team. But I can't see it happening now. It's much better to try and win now when you've got him signed cheap, then deal him if thats the plan.
Seems to be a lot knee-jerk reactions in this thread...
Take a minute to think about it. You have 2 star centres (and yes, I understand Malkin can play on the left wing), one that is projected to be the 'Next One' and one who is currently the league leader in points. You have a great nucleus to build around, but the reality is that there are some holes that need filling (IE: Fleury does not seem to be progressing as hoped). As well, you (and Malkin's agent) have to know that some team will surely hit Malkin with an offer sheet for the max or close enough to it.
Malkin is currently the NHL leader in points and his value is, arguably, at an all time high. There is, of course, a chance you can sign Malkin before he hits RFA status, but you realize that this is contingent on a few things out of your control: Malkin giving some kind of discount and Malkin being content to live in Crosby's shadow during his tenure with the Penguins.
Pittsburgh has also got to be looking at the Tampa Bay model and realizing that a top-heavy forwrad core is not a recipe for success. It's one thing to have several big money players in different positions (IE: Calgary with Phaneuf, Kipper & Iginla), but another to have that much of your cap tied up in 2 forwards.
Sure, Pittsburgh could wait until Malkin is nearing RFA status before making the trade, but what are the odds that Malkin will be leading the league in points at that time (remember, if Crosby is healthy, Malkin will see some of his prime minutes reduced)? What happens if Malkin blows a knee next season?
Granted, it seems ridiculous for a player of Malkin's quality to be traded this young, but there is going to come a time, when Pittsburgh will need to choose between Crosby & Malkin, and let's face it, Crosby isn't going anywhere.
The Penguins plan to spend close to the cap when the arena is finished and Mario came out and stated that they may have to take a hit before the arena is done to keep all these kids. Malkins parents are talking about moving to Pittsburgh because they liked it so much here. I'd offer Malkin 8.7 just like Sid and I would go all the way up to 9 million if he signed a long term deal.
If you really want to start with proposals for Malkin think 5 first round picks and add to that. so if the players you suggest are not worth a first rounder or more don't bother. the reason you add to it is because you would be competing against every other team for Malkin if he becomes a RFA and we could match and trade him to someone else after 1 year anyways.
The Penguins are not in Tampas situation because they plan to spend close to the cap. remember that, Tamps is screwed because they have 20 million invested with 3 players and are only spending 40 million

As the Rangers GM, I would offer 5 1st round picks for Malkin.
Yeah, OK. It might have to be added onto, but it's about the max return you can get for Malkin. 2 top elite level prospects, a very good, young roster player and a 1st round pick.
I'm incredibly impressed Pens fans haven't even, for the most part, even responded to this garbage.
Unless they just haven't seen it yet. In which case, Pens fans will flame this thread (and in this case, deservedly so) unlike any flaming ever descended upon Hockey's Future.

oh, this is just a crazy dumb rumor. its insane. they have yet to even discuss a contract with him, why trade him?
also a lot of people are thinking of the cheap Penguins and they don't realize we have one of the best tv contracts in the US and we are selling out our building. this team will have money to spend when we stop playing in a 40 year old arena.
Hey jack ass, they have the same amount of points. But sorry I should have said someone that is TIED for the league lead in points. I feel like a massive idiot right now because of my glaring mistake.
Thank you for admitting your mistake.
Ovechkin has more goals. He is technically the leader.
Everyones going to think I'm nuts but Sutter may be the man talking to the Pens. Two days ago I heard through a friend that Tanguay isn't going to get anything Sutter wants, but the Pens might be making a play for Phaneuf. I hate the notion of this, so I ignored it. Then Eklund reported that he heard Sutter is working on a "MAJOR" move that hasn't been overly rumored. Now Kypreos sais Malkin is possible. Sounds very nuts, right? And this is the time of year for rediculous rumors to fly around but from a Pens standpoint, it makes sense, though more likely after next year, not now. Sacrifice a blue chip forward who'll want $8m+ after next year, since you have 3, for a blue chip D-man who's signed long term at $6.5m, and you lack a D-man to build around. From the Flames side, as a fan only, I don't like this much. Malkin is great but Dion is great and far more rare. I hope this is all just in my head.
