A draft choice would be good.

I wouldnt expect that they would get anything of real value as any team could have a signed him for cheap as a UFA

I am sure that some team will want to pick him up for cheap at the deadline.

not necessarily true- the thing that will determine his value is other teams' needs towards the deadline. i'd almost guarantee that a guy like oates will be in demand, and i think the oilers will get at least a 2nd rounder for him. it's great asset management by lowe if he does that- basically paid a million bucks for a good veteran to teach the youngsters, and then he would get a 2nd round pick. not bad right?

Would it though? I don't know if we have the depth at centre to do that. Oates, Horcoff, Reasoner (IR), York (IR).

I think the Oilers would need a warm body back. Not much, but something.

I would think that since the Oates experiment was somewhere between barely passable and lukewarm failure, not having to pay him for the rest of the year and a draft choice would be sufficient.

who cares how many C's you have if you know you are out of the playoffs when you deal Oates anyways? It's not like he'sin next year's plans or anything.

Nah. The Oilers will almost certainly be out of the playoff hunt by the trade deadline, and would probably finish the season with Horcoff, Stoll, a call-up from the farm, and maybe Smyth or whoever comes off IR first as the centers.

Nobody around the league is going to give up much to pick up Oates, and I think that at the trade deadline the Oilers will deal him for future considerations to somebody who wants Oates for their playoffs.

We'll give you Buchberger back for cheap
when you trade Oates for a high draft pick

What team would give up a 2nd round pick for Oates now?

I would think that Oates would bring a similar return to what the Habs got for Gilmour last season, ie. a mid round pick.

I think something like Jason Smith and Adam Oates to Colorado or any other contender may bring more in return.

maybe Smith and Oates to NJ, imagine Smith and Stevens on D, ouch. Oates faceoff skills alone would be useful on any team, but if he was to go, I think he'd need to play with superstars to be able to produce, maybe Elias or something. But theres nobody in Edmonton to make Oates look good.

Never hear of Hemsky, York, Smyth or Torres? The problem is an over the hill Oates, not the Oilers skill level among their other top liners.

None of those players are gamebreakers, although Torres and Hemsky might develop into one.

Smith and Oates for Friesen?

...Would give the Edmonton the flexibility (1st/2nd line LW) to move Smyth for a big center (ie. Jokinen).

Riiiight. The Devils need another d-man and and a center with 6 assists so badly that they'd be willing to give up a valuable forward to get them? uh-huh

I thought it was a fair deal, Oates addes some veteran leadership along with some good things (like faceoffs) even if he isn't racking up the points. a slower team like the devils might be perfect for him, and Jason Smith paired with Stevens would be a force out there... Besides, the Devils aren't going to win the cup this year by out scoring their opponents. They will crush them with their impenatrable trap.

But if it is that bad I will retract it...

Oates looks like he's been skating in gravel lately...trading Gomez for him would be robbery. Send him on for a face off and get him off the ice before his lack of speed shows through. Jason Smith on the Jersey blue line and Ryan Smyth up front could make me pretty nervous though.
