U guys hear this one?

During the Habs vs. Wild game, there was some hinting of a rumor
involving Dallas and Boston:
Something in the likes of:
Arnott for Rolston.....

P.S. Also said that the rumor involving Arnott to Mtl. was crap...
AAAAaaaaa.......gave us hope and then BAAAAAAM....

Arnott is a solid player in good standing in Dallas.
Rolston will walk as a UFA this summer.
Why would Dallas do this? (unless they want to dump Arnott's contract but I don't see that hapenning)

As a Bruin fan I can tell you that this is not a new rumour. It first came up in
early December but cooled somewhat when Boston started 2004 on a roll. At first I was against this move because of all the things that Rolston does for the Bruins -
he is probably our most versatile player. But it does look like he will just walk away at the end of the season so now I am in favor of this trade. If Arnott can ever
put everything together again he can be a monster out there. Of course 2 teams
have already said that and decided not to wait any longer - will Dallas be the third?

I honestly don't see much activity for UFAs this summer.

1. Who even knows if their will be a season next year. Thus signing a 31 year old guy would be more like signing a 32 year old guy.

2. The salary structure that a new CBA might create is unknown.

3. Many UFAs are busts anyway.

All these reasons add up to a dry silly season this summer.

Two reasons I can think of. Boston loves Arnott. This is not the first time we have heard rumors about him coming here. We need a veteran second line, natural center. Rolston is a good player but he is almost a player without a position. He does a lot of things very well but he cant pass to save his life so he is bound to the third line. He hasnt played much wing (natural postion) since he arrived here.

If the B's pull off a deal like this I LOVE it. How many more years on Arnott's deal?

Obviously this makes sense for the Bruins. It makes no sense for the Stars to trade a youngish second-line center for a pending UFA, however.

Thats why I wanted to know Arnott's salary and contract terms. They may have to shed payroll for post CBA.

So... they'd move to trade a young center for a UFA and then let him walk? That doesn't make sense. If financials were a primary motivation then they'd ask for a blue chip-type prospect, not an expensive UFA. Arnott makes $3.85M. Rolston makes $3.175M but is heading into his UFA year and will see a raise to similar numbers. So would Dallas make this trade intending to let him walk as a UFA? Doubtful. Rolston is not significantly cheaper than Arnott.

Isn't Arnott 29? Hardly qualifies as a young centre.

Crap deal for Dallas. Stars drop nearly 12 mill in payroll next year with Klemm 2, Young 3.5, Tugnutt 2.5, and Numinen 4.5 likely not resigned or resigned for less. No need to give up your second line center for a UFA.

I read something somewhere about the UFA status and the new CBA and it specifically mentioned Arnott and the possibility that the Stars may not even qualify him....it was a really odd article, but I'll see if I can dig it up.
