This team is building for NEXT YEAR. Huet was never part of the future plans and this team isn't close enough to lose some youth in favor of a supposed kick at the can.
Gainey and company aren't trying to build a team that's gonna win the 2008 Stanley Cup, they're building a team that will win from 2009 onward.
I know he's not part of our future plans. Even then, it would have been better lose him in free agency!
However way you want to look at it, Bob just traded our #1goalie to a competing rival, who just got better for NOTHING! Give me a break about the second round draft pick in 09! It doesn't affect us for AT LEAST two more years!!
This was a bad trade, plain and simple. It was a HUGE risk. I really do and sincerely hope Price rises to the occasion, but if he doesn't Bob Gainey made a huge gamble and lost.
Management and the coaches weren't convinced that Huet was the #1,so why do you assume he was?
Gainey et cie didn't have the confidence in huet that the fanboys do.
It's not even about Huet being the true number 1 or not, because clearly he hadn't been playing well and that was probably a major factor in the decision.
It's the fact that we made a rival better, while not improving our team in the slightest, while simultaneously putting OVERWHELMING pressure on our 20 effin' year old goalie.
I do respect Gainey for having so much faith in his young players though.
Well, I pretty much wasted my morning over here in California seeing that the HABS didn't get Hossa. I was up last night 99% sure we had it because of that misleading blog entry by McKeon on Yahoo.
I have put all my trust in Gainey ever since the beginning and today, it's a true testament that we got screwed by PIT at the last second. I can guarantee that Gainey is gonna come back and say that he tried his best but in the end PIT had a sweeter deal, much like the Briere deal that went sour. There's nothing he can do.
On the flip side, Huet has been playing like ass recently and quite honestly I trust Price more than Huet. Might as well get a pick out of it rather than getting nothing... I still agree with all of you though - "That's it? Only a 2nd round pick?"
PIT kinda broke their bank today, Im glad we didn't. We have fresh legs and we gotta trust Price.
some of you guys are crazy! You'd think Bob would match that offer? You think he SHOULD match that offer? Holy hell man, it doesn't matter what WE think of those players, it matters what WADDELL thinks of those players.
WADDELL.
WADDELL made the decision, not Gainey. I think some people here fail to realize this.

Im going for a win tonight - 3-1 Habs.
Huet is still a great goalie... Stop making excuses for another trade deadline blunder by Gainey.

It IS a blunder - I should've mentioned that....but Im trying to stay optomistic here. Trust me I didnt wanna see him leave too...especially considering that we have a **** trade deadline this year....again!

Well Atlanta got 2 roster players from Pittsburgh as well as a 1st round pick from last year (Espo) and a 1st round pick next year.
Now imagine if Waddell wanted 2 roster players (IMO he'd ask for Higgins & Latendresse/Lapierre), our first round pick from last year (McDo)and a 1st round pick next year. Would you really want to give that up?

This I agree. In no way should Bob be blamed for the Hossa fiasco, and I'm glad we didn't give up a lot of assets for a rental.
btw those who voted "boo gainey" in the poll please PM me so you can go on my ignore list. Only idiots would really boo him after all he has done for the Habs and the city of Montreal in general.
First of all, this does suck. I'm not happy about the Huet deal at all and its too bad we don't have Hossa...
But think about this for a second. Pittsburgh overpaid for Hossa and he's still just a rental. Hossa is going to get overpaid on his contract on top of this. I know people (myself included) would've loved to have seen him in a Hab uniform but this is definitely a case where its a good deal not to make because we would've had to have given up too much.
Pittsburgh has be the favorite to win the Eastern conference.
I can't say they are favorites with Tyrone Conklin in nets, but they have a shot...just like the Habs and Ottawa. I think New Jersey is the #1 contender right now.
Ok, the Poll was merged to all the other threads, but any of you who answered boo like theres no tomorrow are ****ing clownshoes.
I like to think that we as the public of the greatest hockey club in the world should have ALOT more CLASS than that. The man has led his team to 5, count 'em 5 Stanley Cups... only an idiot would boo over such stupid **** as this.
So he tried to land an impact player and didn't deliver... does that take away ANYTHING from his career? Not at all... bipolar habs fans make me laugh and give the rest of us a horrible rep.
If you feel like booing, do it in front your TV so as to not display your complete idiocy to the general public.
Everyone is just disappointed about not getting Hossa and wants to vent.
Waddell was probably asking for too much.
I just find it very easy to dislike the Pens right now. A team that was very close to being sold gets Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa... 3 superstars. If there's one team I'd love to see get knocked out in 4 games in the first round... It's the Pens.
Meanwhile, a team like the Canadiens who have had so much fan support even though we were subjected to years of having to watch our best players traded for nothing and missing the playoffs for so many years... Where's our "superstar"?
I can't say they are favorites with Tyrone Conklin in nets, but they have a shot...just like the Habs and Ottawa. I think New Jersey is the #1 contender right now.
MAF will be back .
Anyway NJ and PITT are the favorite.
Habs are not really among the favorite right now.
Not with their February record and the 2 rookie goalies.
