If he has a good final part of the remaining season and a good playoff he will be offered a contract by Gainey and by others. He is a goal scorer plain and simple, and given the ice time and PP time he will get those totals up once again.

Will he sign in Montreal? Depends.

I think he would like to. He likes the players, they like him. Plus, if the Habs go far in the playoffs and he see's them as a competitive team for the next few years he may sign a hometown deal at a cheaper price if he can get a commitment on a long term for 3 years from Bob.

Even though he had an off year, a strong finish and good playoff along with a better defensive game and +/- that is at even right now I think he will be still get paid the 3 million per season type of deal. He is a 2.9 million now, if Gainey can get him at 3 years for 9 million and get a solid game back in return and 30+ goals he is a steal.

The top RW out there as UFA's are Hossa, Demitra (totals are down and older) and then probably Ryder (Recchi is there too, but he is pushing 40). There is a pay day still out there for him, and with Montreal having difficulty in attracting UFA's they may practice in trying to keep their own.

Just few days ago you were ready to give him 7½M million over three years. Even if he goes .50 ppg to the end of season hes slightly over 30 points player this year. I see a pattern here, 1 million per 10 points? I guess you' would be willing to give the older Kostitsyn 4...5 million too if he wasnt RFA?

Is it you that is being optimistic about Ryder fitting in with all our young wingers, or am I the optimistic one in thinking Ryder will have no place because everyone else will be superior?

You'd have to think Ryder will be looking for some security in a 3-4 year deal after this dismal year. He's been going on one year deals the past little while, so I believe if we wait until the season is over he'll get a 4 year offer elsewhere.

Next year, we only have one player to sign in UFA market and around 7-8 M$ to spend. I rather propose to try to land a better player like:

Hossa
Rolston
Brunette
Huselius
Naslund
Shanahan
Straka
Satan

If after 4-5 days, we cannot sign of them, we can offer a contract to Ryder if he's still available... Because I prefer Rolston at 4 or Brunette at 3.5 than Ryder at 2...

Paying 3 million for a player that for most of the season, it looked like his NHL career was over -is not a steal.

If the guy wants to play for litle money I would defenately sign him again. The potential for 30 goals is there. Its just a confidence thing with him. We allready have a solid group and its not like we are going to count on him to be the go to guy. Again its all about the money. Hes a good complement player to have on a team. a potential 25 to 30 goal guy is not bad on a 3rd line.

Can't remember which pundit said it but a NT/MC on a one year deal is all but considered a given now and I must say I agree with that principle for veterans aged 27+.

i voted yes but at no more than $2 mil. At that price, if he does flop again, you could put him on the 3rd-4th line and it wouldnt hurt so much. Also, i wouldnt sign him for more than 2 years.

If he plays well in the playoffs I wouldn't mind re-signing Ryder.

Just give him a one year deal.

Seriously, if he plays well in the playoffs offer him 3 million for one year. And if next year, he plays great that would mean he would have become a more constant guy, somebody that you can finally rely on. So give him a three year deal in the summer of 09.

All depends on the contract. If the length and money are reasonable, then yes.

Not sure Ryder is gonna bite on another 1 year contract. I think you've gotta give him a 2 year deal at around 2M per, +bonuses.

Nothing wrong with that deal.

I think we should...and for the record, it doesn't seem to me there are that many "Hossa Type" players that are going to be available on the 1st of July...if we don't land Hossa, and lose Ryder, will we then be a better team???

This may be OT, but for the people who said No to the poll, who else would you sign if Hossa DOESN'T WANT TO SIGN HERE???

Remeber Hossa's bro? What will he tell his more talented sibling about the city? We traded him for GARTH MURRAY, you think he forgot?

Yes, sign him to a 2 year deal worth 5 million. It is a cut from his present 2.9 million but it gets him an extra year. Show me you can score 30 -35 goals next year and I will also throw in a bonus. Take it or leave it.

I said no, unless he's willing to take 1-1.5 million per year on a 2 year deal.

He's a good player.. and depending what he does down the stretch is what I'd off him.

His agent has a habit of playing hard ball. He will undoubtedly use the excuse that Gainey told him to work on his play without the puck and get his +/- up. Which he did and which is why his numbers stumbled. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will test the free agent market. He's an UFA with a career of 1 year contracts. He had an off year but chances are out of 29 other teams, someone will offer more money/more time. No home town discount for this guy. He's not a young rookie. You can't tell a 27/28 year old UFA to take less money for a one year deal to see how he does (again) on his stats.

It's not a question of whether we should keep him. Someone will offer him 4yr/16mil and Gainey will not match it. Nor should he.

You have to look at his past development as well, he is a scorer and Gainey himself even said it himself. His overall game has improved and he is entering his prime so he could break out...your analysis is a bit over blown!

Crosby grew up a Hab fan...did you see him try to get a RFA signing sheet offer?

Plus why would Ryder go to a team that is rebuilding and won't be after UFA's this summer, they'll be making them by buying players out.
