For discussions sake..

I had a very heated argument with a co-worker today.

He said that the Habs should have made the following move yesterday.

To Montreal:
Jokinen
Vokoun

To Florida:
Ryder
Higgins
Price
2008 First Round Pick

First of all, he didn't have his facts straight, he claimed Hossa made half as much as hossa, which is not true. He makes 5.25 and Marian makes 6 Million, must have failed math class. Montreal probably can't even afford this deal.

Plus, Florida doesn't downgrade their offence just to get a younger goalie.. It doesn't even make sense from their point of view.

From Montreal's point of view, I'm not trading Price, he is the future, and I believe he will be great.

Any thoughts on this deal? I said I would NOT make the deal. But would any of you have made this deal or a similar one in the summer.

He claims this deal wins us the Stanley Cup this year and maybe 09 or 2010.

This deal doesn't even really improve our team all that much. Higgins will be awesome in a few years

Other claims this fellow made:

Timmins is no good.
Kovalev and Koivu are too old next year to make any type of impact.
Halak is better than Price.
Price will falter, he will never be a franchise goalie.
Gainey is an idiot.
The Aebischer deal we made was a BAD deal. Theo is in Colorado, possibly taking them to the stanley cup and Aebischer is in Lugano.

Personally, this guy pissed me off. Are any of these claims true? and thoughts on the deal?

You should tell him he's better off being a chalk outline on pavement somewhere than breathing the same air as you and me.

Man.. I couldn't even work today.. we argued for like two hours about this.

I'm not trading Higgins, Price and a first for these guys.. and It really upsets me that anyone can say negative things about Trevor Timmins.

Your co-worker only has a job because they're sleeping with the boss. It's the only explanation.

The trade is horrible. Vokoun is over-rated.

Now onto the statements;

1. Trevor Timmins is so good he should be our GM.
2. If Kovalev plays with the same fire next year, I can't see that being true. Koivu will always play with heart so I have no worries.
3. This is the only I think could be true. Halak has excelled at every level just as much as Price has. Both are great young goalies and I'm very interested in the outcome.
4. It could happen.. I very highly doubt it though. He's too calm, collected, and excelled everywhere he's been.
5. Well.. I'm not a Gainey basher but he didn't address our needs yesterday.. and that could of been done easily, IMO. (Johnson/Halpern type + a defenseman like Salvador).
6. At the time of the trade Aebischer was doing awesome in Colorado and Theodore was stinking up every arena he played in. It was also a good trade because Theodore was done here.

Theodore could very well lead the Avalanche to the Cup. He's been a top goalie in the NHL since November, aside from a few bad games.

He thinks he's a big hab fan.. I hope he reads this site. I told him to go to HFboards.

He claimed the people commenting on CBC articles have knowledge and that Gainey is a joke.

Imagine the PR if the team traded Price for Vokoun after getting rid of him for nothing.

There was also the salary factor in the Theo trade. Looking back, it was now good for both teams.

It's good to have someone knowledgeable to talk to ... I can't handle people trashing price or higgins or timmins or kosty..

He also claimed the 2008 and 2009 draft are crapshoots after the first 5 picks and the Huet deal was bad..

This I'll break up into two parts.

The 2008 & 2009 drafts are extremely deep and should have great picks right up to the 4th round.

The Huet deal, in my opinion, was horrible for the simple fact that Price hadn't been playing well recently either. As deep as the draft is, the pick will be like 60th overall.. so it's not that big of a deal. Huet had experience and he seemed like a huge leader in the locker room. Price also respected him very much..

I personally love Halak and feel bad for him being in the AHL (until now) .. but I think he knew he was going to be #1b here next year..

I'm not convinced on the Huet trade for those reasons and one more. If we end up bombing (pressure, lack of experience) and end up missing the playoffs or a 1st round exit (if we finish high).. could kill both Price and Halak.. the media will torture them. They are both great goalies and mentally strong.. but this is Montreal.

I'm warming up to the Huet deal, I believe Price can get the job done, but if he falters, Halak is a very good goaltender and you will all see that.

I think that Huet was not coming back next year and he has done his fair bit of struggling himself. I think a 2nd round pick in 2009 was a decent return for a UFA goaltender who will likely backup Kolzig.

I just think the Habs and Huet were going in a different direction and Gainey has faith in his goaltenders and wanted to manage his assets in the best possible way he could.

Nope, I certainly haven't. That is why your diction pales drastically in comparison to mine.

Funny how I've seemingly not passed the second grade and you were the one who couldn't tell that I wasn't being serious. Your powers of observation are not becoming.

Agreed. The pressure in Montreal is absolutely insane no matter how strong mentally you are. Look at all the players that leave Montreal and start playing well. Their confidence gets shot down here and it picks back up after they leave here. An example is Theodore. He's making a lot of great saves tonight again.
