Patrick Sharp

What was the major problem that your organization had with him?

Was it management or coaching that was at fault with his development in Philly?

Did Eager have the Concussion problems when he was a Flyer or has this been recent since he came to Hawks!

There really was no problem with Sharp in our organization. We just had a crowded roster and he wasn't really going to see the ice. Some people think we traded him to kind of do him a favor...so who knows.

As for Eager, I don't believe he really had any concussion problems while he was here.

Sharp in Philly was a victim of depth. At the time he was traded, he was playing on the fourth line in a limited role. The trade was done to a) give Sharp a real chance and b) to see if Ellison might fulfill the fourth line role better.

At least that's what I recall.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hitchcock didn't like him because he couldn't play defense, thats why we traded him...

We got a third round pick with Ellison, the pick was traded at the draft for a third and fourth and we selected Matsumoto and Kovar.

Seriously, it was two issues.

1) Depth-he was signed to a one way contract and couldn't be sent down. He wasn't going to get ahead of Forsberg/Carter/Richards. He was also better than a 4th liner, but not really a shut down third either.

2) I don't know that Hitch "hated" him, but there was an issue between them. We know this because when Sharp was traded he admitted right off that he put himself in the doghouse by not listening to his coach.

I liked him, even more when he came right out and took responsibility for his part in it. I'm glad he's doing well in Chicago.

It wasn't just Hitchcock's fault ... Sharp also has to share some of the blame as well, and he admitted as such when he was traded.

He wouldn't adapt to The System, or The System wouldn't adapt to him, depending upon whether or not you like Hitchcock.

Hmm, I can't recall Eager having a concussion with us. But he was a Flyer, at some point he's going to have concussion problems.

Glad Sharp's doing well for you guys. Always liked him.

There was also cap issues to deal with. Basically we had guys coming off IR, and Sharp was on a 1 way contract.

Sharp was fine in the system... he just didn't like playing 10 minutes a night.

Although our coach wasn't a big fan of him I think a lot of us were, I can't begin to imagine our PK with Richards and Sharp working it...

He was the first casualty of the crowded roster, Jon Sim met the same demise later on...

That's a good bit of detailed info there, thanks Rick. This way, if Mats or Kov-ash pan out for us, Sharp blowing up for Chicago wont sting as bad.

I vaguely remember him doing much good while he was here. Not sure if anyone remembers this, but I clearly remember the only team Sharp would score goals against was the Islanders. He wouldnt score in any games unless we played the Islanders, in which he would score 2 goals about ever contest. Correct me if I am wrong. A lot of people brought that up while he was here if I remember correctly.
