Francois Giguere - Record as Colorado Avalanche GM

I got this idea from the Phoenix board and thought it’d be a good way to track FG’s record with us. Most of us have been pretty happy with FG's moves so far, so this will be a good way to see how everything works out.

I’ve changed the layout a little bit from theirs, in an attempt to make it a bit different. I will try to update this as soon as possible after moves, but I don’t have as much free time to post here as I used to. I’ve also added links to the news stories and the threads from HF at the time, for some of the bigger moves, so that we can check out our reactions at the time of the moves.

I don't have a problem with just about any deal he's made. The lack of a face off man is still perplexing.

Nitpicks aside, he deserves a world of credit for the absolute 180 he took the Avs on at the deadline.

FG has done a great job so far.

This franchise had a lot of problems when he took over from Lacroix, and he has played a big part in turning it around.

I'll give him an A.

Nice tread Foppa I'm sure it was a lot of work to make.

Right now the only things that bugs me is Clark's contract for next year and that we would need a faceoff guy. Beside that i'm happy with FG's work , now that we have Forsberg and Foote back.

It'll be interesting to see what he does with the defensman this offseason. Sauer, Finger, Liles, and Foote will all be UFAs.

I'm not sure what Foote will be asking for at this point in his career, but we're in pretty decent shape in that while Finger and Sauer certainly deserve raises, they shouldn't be all that significant. You'd hope they want to stay and that no other team puts up a much bigger offer, but I feel pretty good about our chances with those two.

Liles....in one way he should be cheaper because he hasn't been very good this year, especially statistically, and he wasn't too hot last year either. BUT, I think there's a pretty good chance another team will overpay him on reputation, so I would be a little surprised if we resign him. I love the guy, but he may not be worth what we might have to pay to keep him.

maybe we'll trade away exclusive rights to negotiate with him at the draft.

I still don't get the Clark contract hatred, seeing as the defense died when he went down injured (until the Foote, Ruslan acquisitions).

He is a good 2nd pairing defensemen making what some 3rd pairing D-men make these days. Everyone is over-paying for defense, and I think for the minutes that Clark is putting in, his contract is way more than fair

I think Sauer will be resigned, Finger may seek other options, especially if Foote is resigned. Liles probably won't be resigned, unless the cap increase is significant, I think the idea is the groom Cumiskey into Liles part 2. I think Liles will get something at least similar to Tom Preissing ($2.75m/yr-ish).

I love the guy, but he may not be worth what we might have to pay to keep him.
So I've been thinking about this a lot too.

Clark, Cumiskey, Hannan, Leopold, Salei are under contract for next year. I would presume that Foote re-signs here for a couple years at least. that leaves Finger, Liles, and Sauer as UFAs.

The way I see it, I don't think Cumiskey is totally ready yet. He's an injury callup next year again.

I don't see any way you can't bring Sauer back. He's not going to make too much money imo, and he's been freakishly solid this year and last. He's a keeper.

So that's 6 starting D-men right there, with 2 solid offensive types (and another as a callup) and a couple that can go both ways pretty well (Foote, Salei). I don't see how you bring back Liles over any of the 6 above -- especially since he's still going to get paid this offseason.

Finger, I could see re-signing. Depends on how much though, and it would mostly be as a 7th guy.

From my understanding Foote was looking for 2 year extension with Columbus. I think that's what he's gonna ask from Avalanche too, but I think he will accept Avalanche's 3,5 million per year offer..

Cumiskey is no Liles offensively, I don't think he ever will be.

He certainly can't dive as offensively.

Good call , that's a solid point , we could do like Nashville did last year with the Flyers. Who knows maybe we can get a first round back , just to give a team the right to negociate with Liles.

Yeah, Liles has been "shadow of himself" offensively. I think it has something to do with his contract year and all those rumours about him going somewhere and maybe he's squeezing the stick just too much.

It looks like the pressure is finally gone(trade deadline passed) and now he can focus in his game (diving and giving assists).

Of course Liles ain't Timonen and Brunette ain't Hartnell, but they are somwhat close to those guys. Maybe we could get a draft pick or something.

there was also another trade during the 2007 draft which isn't mentioned.

Colorado traded a 6th round pick in 2007 to the Bruins for a 6th round pick in 2008.

Yeah, when we picked up two 6th rounders from Calgary earlier in the draft, we then traded the later one (#169, Radim Ostrcil) to Boston for their 6th this year.

here's a link, its the 2nd from the top but listed next to the Bruins logo.

My only beef with FG is that he blew his wad on signing Smyth and didn't buyout Theodore last offseason. But now that Smyth is playing great with Staz and Duke and Theodore isn't sucking, I realize there's a reason I'm not a GM of an NHL team.

If we could retain Liles for $2.75m/yr I'd gladly bring him back.
