Gainey pursued by The Leafs

TSN Sportscentre just insinuated that The Maple Leafs will be pursuing Brian Burke or Bob Gainey to come to Toronto as GM in the summer.

Apparently The Leafs want a proven guy.

Right. Gainey's going to leave just as the fruits of his rebuilding start to pay off to start all over with the Leafs. I guess Timmins is going with him, right?

Dreger just said that if the Leafs can't get Burke as their GM, that they might go after Gainey.

Why would Gainey leave a great situation in Montreal to go take over there...

Dreger:, dumbest thing I've heard on TSN in a long long time.

What would be Gainey's motivation in switching?

He's put Montreal in a fantastic position and is just about to reap the rewards. Toronto is a good 4-5 years away.

Toronto can't offer him to GM a storied, prestigious franchise because he already is GMing one.

His #23 is in the Bell's rafters, not the ACC's.

And I'm ready to bet Gillet's not paying him peanuts.

Considering how harshly Toronto media treat their GMs, I doubt la Presse's ridiculous and transparent campaign to run him out of town is going to be a factor.

I just don't understand why Gainey would go.

That said, the Leafs should totally kick the tires. Just don't see that they have much to offer.

Yeah I couldn't see him leaving Montreal either. I think The Leafs plan of coaxing a good GM out of another organization may have to come from an American City. I can't see Gainey leaving Montreal for a team he has no ties to, not to mention the fact that his work in Montreal is just starting to come to life.

Rod Smith just mentioned that The Leafs would try it not that Gainey would ever consider it.

Would they even be allowed to discuss anything with Gainey given he's under contract with the Habs?

I believe they'd have to ask The Habs for permission to talk to him about a job, at which point The Habs would probably say Go ******* Yourself.

I don't think this is too far fetched. They tried to land Gainey before they got Dryden.

Money talks, and the Leafs have a lot of it. However, Gainey is useless without Timmins and his staff.. so .. they'd have to take a few people to make it worth it.

With your thread title, I thought we had another purse snatching incident.

I think Gainey was approached as a potential candidate as Leafs GM during Dryden's reign as President, and Quinn that time actually overruled it as he refused his hiring IIRC.

The Toronto GM position is and will continue to be a puppett position.

No way does Gainey go there. No way does Gainey leave here. Gainey has won Stanley Cups as a player here in Montreal, he's going to do it as a GM to become the ultimate legend in Montreal.

He didn't want the job before because of the meddling from above, and the same people are still in charge. So he's going nowhere. During his sister's speach, she quoted him as saying he was going "down the 401, but in the right direction". That's not Toronto.

When he leaves the GM position, he's going to another job in the organization. I believe he's also a vice-president. So he stays with that job, Carbo moves up to GM.

It's just Dreger stirring the pot; while I'm sure the Leafs will ask permission to talk to him and all that we all know he's not going anywhere.

Ya that rings a bell actually. If only Quinn knew that a few years later they would force him into only acting as coach and hire "The Great John Ferguson Jr" as GM. If only he knew.

I think Dregger just wanted to make hfboards go stupid.

They need permission to even fart in his direction regarding the matter and I cant see that happening.

At least we know Timmins wont go either.

I remember a interview somewhere where he was talking about our prospects and the guy asked Timmins.. "If the Leafs offered you a job as their GM would you take it"..

And he said something like "Hahaha.. I'll never sign with the enemy."

Give them permission in exchange for their 1st round pick. This year and next.

Then Gainey can laugh in their face.
