I'm not so sure about that because practically all of Canada starts playing hockey about a week after they can walk (or sooner) and there are still plenty of righties. More lefts for sure, but there are still quite a few rights.
I'm a righty who shoots right
and left. I taught myself how to shoot left over the course of the last few months, and it's actually worked. It feels really weird at first, but you get used to it to the point where you don't feel uncomfortable with it.
