Where would R. J. Umberger play on this team

RJ always impresses me when I watch the Flyers. Where do you think he'd play on this team if the Rangers had held on to him?

Maybe he'd have forced Betts out, but this Rangers team would have no use for him.

He'd have been the 3rd line center at the start of the year. At this point, I think Dubinsky is the better player though, so he'd either be 4th line or not at all (trade bait)

This has to be the most pointless thread ever. Lets just speculate where Phil Kessel, Jeff Carter, or insert (ANY OTHER PLAYER HERE). Until they actually sign a contract, or are mentioned in trade winds, its just a waste.

This is asking the same thing as, "Where would Marek Zidlicky play on our defense?"

No one really knows, no one knows how either of these players would have developed if they stayed with the Rangers.

Yeah, maybe. Betts is an ideal 4th line C -- great on faceoffs, great on the PK, and one of the best shot blockers in the league. Umberger give you more offense, but less defense and costs twice as much.

Umm Umberger was Ranger property which is why this thread was brought up I'm assuming unlike the others you mentioned.

Umberger...

would've been traded at the deadline with Prucha, Sauer and a first round pick for Hossa - assuming that the second round pick the Rangers received for Umberger did not turn into Sauer. Then I'd have to make up some other combination.

On a more serious note...

was he going against Jagr on Sunday (I missed about 45 minutes of the game (gametime 45 minutes, not actually time)? Has he been going against top lines consistently this season?

4th line. There's no other spot he'd fit. Every other center besides Betts is better than RJ.

Maybe he could play wing on the 3rd and displace either Prucha or Callahan. That's as far as he'd go, though.

It didn't; it actually was traded to Calgary along with the #1 pick from Toronto, which allowed the Rangers to select Korpikoski.

But, frankly, this whole topic has a faulty premise. If the Rangers have Umberger ready to win a spot out of 2005 camp, do they trade for Rucchin, do they sign Cullen in 2006, do they sign both Gomez and Drury this past summer?

Yeah, I have no real basis for my prediction. The lineup has been shuffled so frequently this season, who knows how it would have shaken out? I mean, who saw Straka and Drury on the third line? Or Dubinsky on the first?

I think the best thing is that he isn't playing for us.

Hahah right, he's playing the "Left Out" position for us, right? That was me on the basketball team.

Totally OT, but Dag, any idea where I could go to get some good FMW DVDs?

Doesn't really change much. Highest he'd be is on the 3rd line.
