La Belle Trade

This is from Bruce Dowbiggin's Calgary Herald column today:

La Belle trade

Of course a trade might shake things up. In Montreal, they've been panting for Denis Gauthier/draft pick to the Habs for Niklas Sundstrom/Yanic Perreault. Seems to make sense on hockey grounds. Gauthier's taken permanent resident status in Sutter's doghouse while right-wing Sundstrom was a Sutter favourite back in San Jose for his two-way play.

Problem? Perreault and Sundstrom make $3.7 million between them while Gauthier's tab is around $1.3 million. Sutter's been told he can't add payroll without dumping an equal amount. Even with Perreault an unrestricted FA at year's end, you're still heavy on the Gauthier/Sundstrom equation.

Have to add another pricey body. Craig Conroy. Martin Gelinas. Hmmm . . . would the Habs take on Conroy, who started his career there?

hmmm... might be a joke, but if it's not, it's just a franco/english title.

Now, about the original post, i really look forward to find out what is really going on between Calgary/Montreal. I wish we were a month away just to realise how true is all this. We've been talking about this for quite some time now.

Oh I see. He was just driving home the point that the trade is with Montréal. Man he is witty...

I don't get the point of trading Sundstrom right now... but if that's what we have to do to get Gauthier, I'd do it.

It's "la belle province" for Quebec. Does other province have nickname too?

Would the habs take on Conory? In a freaking New York second. Juneau could pack his bags to Hamilton, or the ECHL for all I care if Montreal got Conroy. But alas, probably never happen.

Conroy has 3 goals so far.. I don't know if he missed alot of games but that's not very impressing!! Gelinas has 13 and would probably fit on our top 2 lines. But the key player is Gauthier IMO. I don't care if we get Conroy or Gelinas, I just want Gauthier!

OK guys, I think we will get Gauthier today. Yes, I really think it is probable - but we will give another defenseman. Why we call-up Dykhuis? Probably because Gauthier will not play tomorrow.

But maybe I am only dreaming, and those are stupid jokes.

Indeed Conroy has missed a lot of games, the low goal totals aside, I think he has something like 21 points in 31 games or so. I look recently, can't remember exactly. He would definitley make the habs tougher down the middle, and could actually match up physically against bigger centers.

Gelinas has something like 27 points in 50 games, not terribly impressive, nor would he be able to move anyone from the top lines aside from Dagenais if his struggles continue.

To get Juneau and his ailing back out from anchoring the checking, it couldn't come any quicker.

In my opinion Craig conroy would be a great third line centre. he is gritty, physical, and can pot some goals here and there. Plus he is RIGHT handed. All this trade talk makes sense now

I say do it, but will Calgary
