William Quist update

OK so I'm researching info for and then writing up the new Top 20 project when one of my conversations turns in the direction of the Europeans Edmonton owns. I had asked earlier in the season for an update on William Quist but at the time (just before Christmas) Lorne Davis had just passed away and guys had other things on their mind than Mr. Quist.

But I was told that there were issues with him and his team in Linköping and that he'd ended up back with Tingsryd, his club from last year.

So now that it's come up again I ask for more details and here is the update I was given:

"He got into a fight with his coach and left the team (Linköping). He then went back to his original junior team."

"[Sweden] had a national U19 camp that he was at and he really disappointed me from the guy I saw at our training camp; basically no effort to his game so I told him ‘If you think this is how you’re going to get to the NHL, you don’t have a chance and from the standpoint of your development you’ve gone backwards! If you have any thoughts of wanting to become a pro you’d better give some serious thoughts to coming to Canada to play next year'."

"He’s going to call me at the end of the year."

I believe the "fight" to be a disagreement and not an actual fist fight...

So it should be interesting to see what will happen here this summer. Will the Oilers or Quist's agent find a CHL team willing to draft him in the CHL Import Draft? Will Quist decide he wants to stay in Europe?

By the way, that information comes from Kevin Prendergast who is one of many people quoted in the top 20 feature. This is the sort of stuff I'd normally save for the actual Top 20 article itself but, Quist isn't making it onto the list so I thought I'd share it in a thread. There is a ton of stuff like this for the guys who did make the top 20 though...

...and yes, it's 99% done and ready to be submitted. Should be available in the next few days. I'm actually just holding onto it to see if Pouliot plays in Chicago on Sunday because then he'd be coming off. Then it's a read over, update of stats, some dotting of "i's" and off to the online editor.

Cheers!

Guy Flaming

Guy, Could The Oilers possibly approach the Oil Kings about taking a shot at this guy?

Thanks for the info Guy.

At what point do we just forget about drafting europeans?

The Oilers have been money drafting in the later rounds when we stay in N.A.

Bumagin is still on the rader and Omark is doing some nice things in the SEL but that's about it for our Euro's. Time to pull the plug.

I heard earlier in the year that Quist wanted to come over to North America to play junior next year. Hopefully he can have a better showing than Kytnar.

This is a great idea. I think the Oil Kings should bring him on board.

I'd actually like it if we traded for the rights to most of our prospects that might play in the CHL. Best to get them into the system as early as possible imho. No point in leaving our kids in other coaches hands(unless they are known great coaches, of course) when we have a perfectly good junior team of our own. I wonder how Bumagin's last 2 years might have gone differently if we'd brought him over to play in the CHL and learn how to play the game

Nash would be another guy I would like to get into the WHL and preferably onto the Oil Kings. He simply won't play enough games in the NCAA. If he stays there for 2 years he might play a bit over 60 games in that time. Nowhere near enough. I say get him into the WHL now so he's better prepared for the NHL mid-season grind.

Plus, if the Oil Kings started bringing in future Oilers, they would also see a ticket sale boost. It's easier to sell "future Oiler" then "future NHLer"

I think this can be attributed to lack of scouts. If i'm not mistaken, didn't Guy not mention we had two specialised guys for Europe. 2 guys, for Sweden, Russia, Czech, Finland and Slovakia. I think we need to expand our scouting in Europe, I mean 2 guys is not enough.

And guy, the ton of info you have on guys outside the Top 20, feel free to post it here, I'd love to read it too.

It would be a nice dream to see future Oilers on the Oil Kings for sure. It's kind of difficult though unless they are drafted or paying rights traded to teh team.

Also Cogliano certainly did not lose any development from playing the the NCAA rather than the CHL so the WHL is not a cure all.

Thanks for the update on Quist Guy. He was interesting to watch in training camp and had some moves but was a bit clumsy I think possibly due to his height and was regularly frustrated coming to the bench. While he was able to take a hit I think he was surprised how hard it was to stand ground at this level.

A few times he was talking to himself on the bench visibly irritated with how a shift had gone and MacT went out of his way to console Quist and offer him support recognizing the talent, if not the confidence, was there. It was clear how discouraged Quist was.

A talented player but maybe not with the heart to take it to the next level.

We can only hope the next thing we hear is:

Frampton Comes Alive!

(I still can't resist)

I'm not bashing the NCAA. I quite like our kids playing there. Just not Cornell. Cogliano played for a top team in Michigan that played a full NCAA season and was always involved in the post season too. Cornell plays around 30+ games a year with no postseason. So Cogs might have gotten in 45+ NCAA reg/post season games + the WJC, Nash is getting 30 and that is it. If one of our kids plays in the NCAA I would vastly prefer they play for one of the big teams like MSU, Michigan, UND, Wisconsin, etc. If they aren't on a top team, and they are a top pick of ours, I think we should put some pressure on them to get them onto a team that will play more games.

i agree with what your saying, but... at the same time these guys are technically going for there off ice education not there on ice education

That is only a legit argument if anyone thinks the players will stay for their full degree. Anyone think Nash is going to go for all 4 years? I don't, 2-3 max and he's going to be a pro. So there is no difference for him if he leaves this summer without a degree(to play in the WHL) or in 1-2 years without a degree(to play in the AHL).

Thanks for that Guy.

It sounds like there is a little stubborn immaturity that needs to worked out of the kid. Otherwise it is not looking good.

Remember how adamant Cogliano was that he was staying all 4 years? These players can always finish their degrees after their playing days. If they can muster up the energy after counting their millions, that is.

At least Quist isn't a highly rated prospect.. or the poor guy would have the "bad attitude" stigma attached to his name for life like Schremp.

He seems to have found his way of late playing for Tingsryd in Swedish Tier III where he has posted 6 goals 6 assist in 12 games. Nybro a team in Allsvenskan(Tier) has shown some interrest in getting him to play there next season. I think it would be a step in the right direction cause they are a pretty stable team in the middle of the standings that can afford him to develop him without stressing. I mean both Berglund and Backlund have played all year at this level so if he can go to Nybro and continue to produce there is a good chance he have a shot at making Sweden WJC squad next season.

I've tried to search newspaper about this supposed disaggrement with his coach and have come up with nothing. It's not really fair to put a label like "bad attitude" just because the move to Linköping J20-team didn't pan out.

I am glad the Oilers drafted all Europeans after the 1st 2 rounds last year. Some of the best sleepers are in Europe and I think in this aspect they did well. Wonder what Mayorev is doing ?

Top 20 update...

I'm having to completely retool it so it's going to take me a couple extra days now. I've been asked to keep it at 150ish words per player and I was running easily 5 times that much because of all the content (quotes, scouting reports, etc).

The final version will be a much scaled back one that will still have the main points but not the depth as the original version (which was being submitted tonight btw). So, give me a few days to find, sharpen and wield my hatchet.

sorry for the delay after promising it was coming early this week, my honest to goodness plan was for it to come out by Tuesday so it could be a topic on the show that night, that wmight have to happen next Tuesday instead.

That's disappointing to hear, Guy. Artificial limits really hamper a writer's ability to inform their audience sometimes. I know you'll still find a way to get your point across, but I was looking forward to all the reports and quotes.

No need to apologize for the delay, as it isn't really your fault.

Might you release the full version, with quotes, et al., sometime after the official version comes out? Say for download from your website? I'm sure most of us would welcome the extra detail.

The important stuff obviously won't be cut, it'll mostly be presentation things.

Jimmy had a dreadfully tough time learning how to ride his bike on the street because of all the pot holes. An unusually frigid winter created extensive frost heaves that the town's road systems were not built to withstand leaving the pavement severely cracked and eroded.

Will become:

Thanks to poor road conditions, Jimmy's bike riding skills suffered greatly.

You get the update and the reason... just not the full description. get it? I imagine some of the stuff could be put in the thread that is talking about the top 20, quotes or some of the paragraphs, but not 100% sure on that yet.

Hey, look who's been up all night editing! time for me to go to bed before I have to get my daughter up for scholl... in 20 minutes.
