Huh? I haven't seen him underrated at all. Most people seem to think Vermette is worth slightly more than him (which is an accurate assesment) but that the deal is pretty balanced and makes reasonable sense.
Lappy would be considered an all star caliber gritty forward if he were on the Sens/Leafs/Devils etc.
No. No he wouldn't. He would be considered a quality role player like he is now with slightly more recognition.
If LA can get a deal for Vermette by dealing Lappy it really helps Ottawa but not LA. Not taking anything away from Vermette who is going to be good, but LA would probably be asking for a defenseman instead. With Miller's timetable unknown, Visnovsky just placed on IR, it was said in the paper that Murray might play Kip Brennan on defense in Calgary tonight.
Sure, LA could take Vermette and take their chances on guys like Ziska and Gleason for the rest of the year, but it doesn't seem likely.
Also Vermette has the most value, but I would think that possibly Dave Taylor would be inquiring about Pothier, Rachunek, or Volchenkov. Now granted, something would have to be added to pry Rachunek or Volchenkov, but Pothier or possibly even Shane Hnidy may be someone that would be interesting for LA.
One major point is that of financials. Lappy is a free agent. He isn't going to command a boat load of money, so why would LA trade him? He provides great leadership, still drops gloves if he has too, and is good for 10 goals and 20 points per season, all while being fairly defensively responsible.
This is definitely a deadline deal if it's going to happen, but with both teams in a playoff spot right now, deals are difficult to come by, because both teams won't want to change chemistry all that much.
