Proposal - LA / TOR

Lets say LA finishes with the 1st overall pick and TOR finishes anywhere between the 3rd and the 5th pick.

Would the Leafs do this?

To Toronto
2008 1st overall pick
Tom Preissing

To LA
2008 3rd-5th overall pick
2009 1st round pick
Brian McCabe

This would give Leafs their guy in the draft and would obviously be a huge hit playing in Toronto. It would also save the team around 8 mil a season and allow them to tap into free agency.

This would put LA in a position where they get the defenseman they want to draft, and lets them roll the dice on how successful Toronto will be next season. They would also get an improvement on defense, but would be paying for it financially.

I picked McCabe as he has the highest salary of the bunch, and LA does have some play in the cap. It could be Kubina if he was willing to drop his NMC.

Anyways, what do you think? Leafs get Stamkos and cap relief, the Kings get their guy anyways and get a crack at Hedman/Tavares.

McCabe wouldn't do it regardless.

If Toronto picks that high, they wouldn't do it either.

To Toronto: Cammalleri and Tom Preissing

No possible way Toronto trades 09 First rounder with Tavares out there and them fully committed to rebuilding.

I'm sure I'll get flamed, but I would certainly consider that if I were LA. I think it kinda sucks from a Toronto perspective, but it might suit both teams.

If LA ends up with the first overall pick, I think they'll peddle it to a team somewhere around 3-5 and pick a defenseman. Toronto would be a perfect example of a target team.

Because sadly, he's better than all but one of our defensemen.

LA is all over this like Oprah Winfrey on a cheesecake. I mean, Lombardi's likely to pass on Stamkos anyway, and the Leafs would definetely take him, so basically this way all DL does is add McCabe's contract in exchange for Priessing's, which is only like a $3 million difference, actually adds a very good defenseman in Bryan McCabe, and picks the guy he wanted anyway. From that point on it's only a slight downgrade for LA possibly, trading down and taking on that much money. But, for it, they get a first rounder in 09 which could turn into JT or Hedman.

Toronto would be very stupid to do this for Stamkos, and regardless, McCabe would never go for it.

Edit-Upon further review, the difference is only about $2 million for the remainder of McCabe's contract. Considering how much better McCabe is than Priessing, damn, him and a Toronto first in the 3-5 range for LA's first overall and Priessing is almost fair. Not quite, but close enough, and certainly not a 2009 first in terms of difference.

Not only that, but how about a chance at Tavares with the Leafs pick next year just for them to move up a couple spots this year? That's horrible for Toronto.

Maybe so, but that doesn't mean that you take on a fat contract like the one McCabe has in hopes of the Leafs winning the 2009 lottery.

depending on how the Philly games go, the leafs might not be drafting high enough for the Kings to get Doughty/Pietro/Schenn.

i think the Kings have a better chance at trading with St Louis, who have EJ and don't need a stud d-man, but could really use stamkos. plus, STL will probably be drafting in the 2-5 range. and all STL would need to do would be to throw in a 3rd or a prospect. no need to dump salary/bring roster players into it.

to me, they make better trading partners and it just makes it more likely to happen.

Whoever gets the no.1 pick will just take Stamkos. He's an impact player and unlike a defenseman will likely be ready to play in the NHL next season. If you have the no.1 pick and there is one guy you want there's no reason to trade down.

Put down the peace pipe, because it ain't creating peace.

Also, for the OP, that is way over-payment from Toronto's side. We're perfectly happy picking one of the other elite players in the top 5. There's no way we move a pick that could quite possibly become Tavares or Hedman next season along with our pick from this season for Stamkos.

I also fail to see how this saves us nearly 8 million a season, when Caber's cap hit is only 5.75, and he only makes 14.5 after this season.

We would love to move up and grab Stamkos, but there is no way you're going to take us out to town, especially with John Ferguson Jr's name completely erased from our organizational tree.

Both the original and the second deals are terrible for Toronto.

Ouch... as a leafs fan, if we don't get stamkos, c'est la vie.

We should end up with anywhere between 3-6... we'll still get someone solid.

hodgson
schenn
bogosian
beach
filiatov

etc... all avail.
