I propose the introduction of a new stat, the CWG. The Chicken Wing goal.
Unique to the Canadiens, this stat records who scored the fifth goal in a game. This, of course, means chicken wings at the Cage, who probably did not expect to have to dish out so many wings this year, what with Montreal having a popgun offense of four fourth lines!
Astoundingly, Montreal has accumulated 15 Chicken Wing Games with 11 games yet to play. Perhaps less remarkably, Montreal is undefeated in Chicken Wing Games -- scoring five goals is usually a pretty good way to win a game. Unsurprisingly, Boston's taken the most CWGs in the chin.
Current CWG Rankings
Mark Streit 3
Andrei Kostitsyn 2
Mikhail Grabovski 1
Chris Higgins 1
Roman Hamrlik 1
Kyle Chipchura 1
Mathieu Dandenault 1
Bryan Smolinski 1
Maxim Lapierre 1
Alex Kovalev 1
Sergei Kostitsyn 1
Tom Kostopoulos 1

I actually analyzed some CWS (Chicken Wings Stats) a couple weeks ago in my blog.
-Last year we had 15 CWGs, or one roughly every 5.5 games. Our record was 12-3-0. There were three teams against whom we had two CWGs- Buffalo, Boston, and Toronto- and we split the CWG series, so to speak, against each of them.
-This year, we have 15 CWGs with 11 games remaining, for an average of wings every 4.73 games. 4 of the CWGs have come against the Bruins. Our record in CWGs this year is a sparkling 15-0-0.
has anyone ever gone in to claim the wings? can anyone just go in and get the free wings after a cwg is scored ?
You have to have either your ticket from the game or the coupon printed off La Cage's website. I think there's a link to the coupon on rds.ca too. I've only ever done it with my game ticket.
But ask any waiter and they will make one for you. They have all the ingredient and will charge a little premium over a fries.... if you get a beer with it.
I don't know if this was a coincidence, but there was an article in the newspaper yesterday morning talking about the CWG. Here's a rough translation of what it said:
"70 000 chickens killed by the Canadiens
No it's not another kind of bird flu, it's the Habs offense who is responsible for the death of thousands of chickens everytime they score 5 goals or more.
[...]
It already happened 15 times this season, La Cage already gave about 70 000 coupons and 50% of the winners came back to claim their Wings.
[...]
Mark Streit scored 3 times the 5th goal of his team, he, therefore, gave 56 000 chicken wings. The Kostitsyn brothers gave together 74 480 chicken wings. "
