Columbus might be interested in Gomez

Quote:
Rampant leaguewide speculation has the Jackets making a draft-day run at San Jose Sharks center Patrick Marleau, but it's possible -- even likely -- that Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson will check on the availability of others, including Daniel Briere of Philadelphia, Patrick Elias of New Jersey, Scott Gomez of the New York Rangers.

Those latter three clubs could be looking for roster and payroll flexibility, and the Blue Jackets -- way under the salary cap -- could be sitting in the catbird seat.
http://www.dispatch.com/live/content...F.html?sid=101

I find this interesting because all of those players besides Gomez have full no trade clauses. Gomez's NTC only allows him to nix trades to 3 teams of his choosing. So if we fall short in the playoffs, it may be feasible to move Gomez in the summer and use that cap space to get that #1 dman we need, and maybe get a solid draft pick from CBJ as well..

Who knows, maybe this is the kind of trade Sather & Howson were discussing in December when all of those rumors were persisting.. Thoughts? I say with Dubinsky stepping up into the top 2 center roles, this may pretty likely.

Get rid of Jagr and Straka for cap space before Gomez.

I hope all people in Ohio aren't that ****ing stupid.

And I hope Rangers fans aren't this ****ing stupid to believe it, either.

Its not really a rumor. All it says is the Jackets will ask if Gomez is available. And for Rick Nash he is.

DruMez, I expected more of you. To think this is even a remote possibility is crazy. MAYBE if we ****can it the rest of the season and miss the playoffs, but he's been arguably our best player this season, and he provides "protection" for Dubi to learn the game and grow.

Don't see that happening unless he demands a trade. I'd take Voracek + 1st from them, if the pick is in the top 5. Then we use the cap space to sign Campbell or Redden, we look like bandits, and still have Drury-Dubinsky-Anisimov up the middle.

Trade away the closest thing we have to a #1 center for a draft pick and "payroll flexibility?!"

That's a new one.

Not to mention he's the only playmaker on the team. IMO, Drury is more of a winger that plays center. We need Gomer.

Absolutely. Gomez is our top point getter. Probably will be next year as well. I would agree with getting rid of Straka, Shannahan and Malik for cap space but I would re-sign Jagr at the right price. I don't like the idea of giving up a number one center who has years ahead of him left.

Fantastic. Lets trade away a guy, you can argue, has been the best player on the team.

Entering/in his prime.

Lets move Hank while we're at it too.

For Roloson.

don't think it would ever happen, but it all depends on what they would be offering. it would be silly for Sather just to say no right away. Listen first than decide.

As what Singn' said...

they're going to ask for the availability assuming a team is looking for cap flexibility. Gomez is what, 28 years old? I don't think Sather's going to get rid of a guy who's pretty much being paid fair value by today's market standards, and a guy who is this team's only real #1 centerman (meaning a #1 who can be a #1 on his own).

What can the Rangers do for cap space? Find two players for the $5MM+ they're paying Shanny. Promote a player or two from HFD to fill holes at low costs (i.e., replace Straka's $3MM+ with, way, Prucha, who's sitting on the bench and replace Prucha with a cheaper 13th forward). There's still room - all the cap space isn't dead yet.

Relax. It's pretty common knowledge that Scott Howson is going to be talking to 29 other teams for a #1 center in the off-season. This is not a trade rumor whatsoever. All it says is that it's likely that Howson would talk to teams about a trade. No ****.

Take it with a grain of salt please.

The only player on the Blue Jackets that I'd consider moving Gomez for is Rick Nash, and he's going not going anywhere.

dont need cap flexibility cuz its gona happen anyway

1. Cap is probably going to increase

2. If it doesnt, this happens. Shanny, Straka, Jagr, Malik, Mara, come off the books with im sure a few of them not returning.

Gomez has really picked it up over the year. He has great chemistry with Dawes which could come in handy as the young one matures....he'll have a center he knows how to play with. Maybe Gomez can help turn Dawes into Gionta and he can make a pairing like that

Even if the answer is no, it never hurts to ask, of course othe teams are intrested in Gomez, he is a top 25 center in this leauge.

I would trade Gomez even up for Nash. Nash would be the best power forward to play for the Rangers in 40 years unless you want to count Messier. And Nash has an unbelievable career ahead of him. He's still a baby. This doesn't mean that I don't realize the value of Gomez. It's a reflection of how much I think of Nash.

exactly. never just say no to a deal. If a team asks for a player just see what they would be offering in return. You may actually get more than the player is worth back. it can never hurt just to listen to offers that other GM's make you.

Chosen...

ideally you'd want Gomez centering Nash - Sather should try to steer the Bluejackets towards Drury and Prucha for Nash. Of course none of this ain't happening, but it's nice to dream.

With all the cap room the Rangers could potentially free up this summer with departing UFAs, I doubt they'd need to find a taker for Gomez for "flexibility."
