Why do most people love/hate Detroit?

im new to hockey, and one thing i have noticed is that most people either
hate or love the red wings. they are my #2 team, but thats only because
my dad thought that Gordie Howe was a god.

my question is why is it such a love/hate thing?

As for me, we have no chance what so ever for winning the division with them getting 110 points every year. Second, 3,000 Red Wing fans cheering for the enemy in Nationwide and third, a truckload of CBJ fans trashing their Columbus sweaters for Detroit 4 times a year wanting Detroit to win.

Same reason people hate the Yankees in baseball and the Cowboys in football. Pre-cap they were the guys who always spent the money to bring in the mercenaries.

Taking the analogy further, the Avs would be the Boston Red Sox--they do pretty much the same thing, but at least they aren't the Wings. And the Rangers would be the New York Mets--a team that spends a lot but it never does them any good except for the one time in 50 years they actually win the championship.

When your one of the best teams in the league, year in and year out, your gonna get that.

Their fans don't help out either. I remember in our first year they were sporting an extra 30 million in payroll, or something like that, and they (the fans at the arena) were talking trash about beating us, at our own arena. Of course you were beating the crap out of an expansion team.

For me, it's they are a division rival and they are the team to beat. They are the guys you have to knock off before you can expect anything higher then a 4 seed once you get in the playoffs.

My other hate is for Nashville, our inablity to beat them has cost us many valuable points. They are the team we have to learn to beat before we can make the playoffs.

Good stuff really.

Division foe.

Booing of Fedorov(might seem trivial now to some).

Hasek's derogatory comments.

Best team in hockey is always fun to root against.

Lastly, my hockey fan origins started in Quebec.

There is an extended hate from most Columbus Fans because of the whole OSU vs Mich thing. White and Red is as bad as Maze and Blue if you ask me.

Many of the reasons have been listed already. Since we entered the league, Detroit has been the standard of excellence in the Central and we've been bottom feeders. Another thing is that in the pre-cap era the wings could spent more than everyone else. It's also disheartening in your own building when the wings are shredding us and wing fans pushing it in our face. I was there last spring when a fan threw an octopus on the ice. I keep hoping they just get old and fade away but that hasn't happenned yet.

because they are a michigan based team
because their fans are clueless turncoats
they are one of those teams that other teams love to hate, (another good example is the leafs)
they are from michigan

dont forget about how everytime any of them get hit near the crease they end up laying on top of the goalie yet they never get called for goalie interference, seriously can their balance really be that bad?

Because of the CBJ fans that wear Detroit sweaters on games Detroit comes to Columbus.

Because of the Detroit "fans" that bash Columbus while in Columbus.

Bandwagon "fans". (can't stress this one enough).

I'm sure I could think of more, but I just woke up.

The reason for my pure and undying hatred for the Detroit Red Wings is simple. Seven seasons of watching them slaughter my beloved Blue Jackets like they don't even belong in the same league. Seven seasons of frustration akin to that of a kid with an cruel older brother that likes to make him look stupid in front of his friends. Seven years of watching "NHL Greatness" paraded in front of me like someone eating roast chicken in front of a starving man. Seven years of futile hopes that this would be the year that the Blue Jackets would be the team to knock the Red Wings out of the play-offs in the first round. Simple really.

Generally I like the team itself, except Chelios I hope he gets his wiener chopped

What I hate is their obnoxious fans and the bandwagon

For me, it's the unabashed ass-hattery seen when locals show up in throngs, decked out in Wings gear, every time the team is in town. Once Detroit has fallen off the wagon (and they will; everybody does, eventually) and the CBJ are winners, these same "life-longers" will suddenly realize that they've been CBJ fans all their lives.

"Me? I never cheered for the Wings, against the CBJ".

That, and the little ********* throwing the octopus on Nationwide ice.

I talked to an usher (or a cop? can't remember) but I was told the guy was held in custody before being ejected. I never did find out if he suffered anything other than getting a stern lecture and tossed out.
