jason smith to sign with nj in the offseason (the edmonton journal)

The Edmonton Journal reported yesterday that Flyers captain Jason Smith will sign with New Jersey this summer as an unrestricted free agent. The Flyers have not extended his contract and, according to Western scouts, tried unsuccessfully to move the defenseman at the trade deadline. The Devils had tried to get Smith at the deadline, according to one league official, but were not willing to offer a decent return. The Flyers expect Smith to sign with New Jersey this summer, anyway.

The Devils have heavily pursued him via trade. The Flyers expect the Devils will go hard for him in the offseason.

Where is the tampering? The Flyers are just making a logical inference. Anyone with half a brain could do that.

Nah, I think it's pretty much just speculation because they tried to trade for Smith at the deadline that they'd also try to sign him in the offseason.

It doesn't say anything about the Devils even attempting to communicate with Smith. It's like if Smith came out tomorrow and said "as soon as this season's over, I'm signing with New Jersey" - not tampering because NJ hasn't done anything.

Lets say player DID do that, besides it being very disloyal to the team he is currently playing for, is there any actual penalty for saying that?

I can't imagine there would be, aside from an in-house disciplining like a suspension or a scratching...Samsonov kinda pulled a similar thing in Montreal when he said he regretted signing with the Habs, and he was scratched for the remaining 10 games or whatever, but it's not like he was tearing it up anyway.

Nope. Nothing in the SPC prevents a player from making a statement like that. It probably wouldn't go over well with his team, but if the player wants to rip on his team night and day, he's free to do so.

Why aren't the Flyers interested in bringing him back? Cap issues?

He isn't that good anymore. We can't afford to overpay for someone like Smith because he's been a bargain the last few years or for intangibles.

He's pretty much a 3rd pairing guy right now considering he's never fully healthy. So anything above 2 is unreasonable.

Holmgren has said he was interested in re-signing him, but maybe he doesn't think Smith is worth whatever he is asking for.

Holmgren said yesterday at a season ticket holder event that Smith has told the team he wants to stay and will wait until the contracts for Carter and Umbeger are resolved if he has to.

Holmgren also was shocked about the report from this article, said he knew nothing about it, and said that if it's true it would be a case of tampering.

I'm not saying this won't happen, not saying I would be upset if it did happen because I don't want Smith back, but I'm also not believing this report.

5 other teams wanted him to at the deadline according to homer, why have NJ been singled out for a new destination for him.?

a couple of reasons I can think of. He started his career there for one. And with the Devils phenomenal system he can be a pretty damn good defensman unlike places where there is a looser system

Just because Lou tried to trade for him, doesn't mean Lou want's him long-term. The Devils need to go after a Campbell or at least someone like Liles. They can also try and re-sign Salvador who is similar to Smith.

If our system makes a player like Brookbank a decent defender... Jason Smith can become our #2 guy without any problem. It's all about OUR system, no need to look anywere else.

His health maybe a issue but if he's a 3rd pairing d-men in Philly, it doesn't mean he'll be a 3rd pairing defender for N.J. If our system allows guys like Vitaly Vishnevski, Mike Mottau and Sheldon Brookbank to play full time on our blueline, then there's defenatly a place for someone like Jason Smith.
