Is Hall Gill better in a limited role or can he excel with makor minutes. I wanted to ask Leaf fans what his role was when he played in Toronto. Also, which defensive partner did he play better with? I don't think he's a top pairing guy but was wondering if he could play there if paired with the right kind of partner (not that we have said guy).
Probably better suited to limited 5-on-5 with tons of PK time. He can log the minutes but I doubt you really want him too. We paired him with Ian White most of the time here, a small puck mover who can skate but is terrible soft on the puck.
ya, Hall () is best suited to limited 5-on-5, with lots of PK. He's not a very good skater, as I'm sure you already know, so if you use him too much 5-on-5, he'll get tired faster with the pace of the game, but on PK where all he needs to do is clear bodies and block cross-crease passes and such, he excels because of the limited movement.
As for a partner, you want to set him up with someone like a Letang. We had him with White, and then with Stralman as this season went on. He is dependable enough that you can put him with the young guys, let them make their mistakes, and have him cover up for them, while being a mentor to them, just expect his partner to be getting most of the dump-ins.
I certainly don't think he would excel with major minutes, if your depending on Gill to play on top D pairing your going to be in a bit of trouble. And i wouldn't say he excels in the PK, Leafs were 27th in PK with him. For his size he doesn't clear the crease as well as he should, although he did seem to be a very good 5 on 3 PK man.
He's a third pairing defenceman that is good for about 10 min a game. He is half decent on the pk and was way over used in Toronto. If I were Pitt I would just use him on the PK and maybe a few ES shifts.
