I think to say that he exclusively benefits from the PP, rather than contribute to it, underestimates the guy. He is an asset, and trying to keep assets at market value is sound management. If he is flexible about non-trade clauses, give him something that compares to market value. At the very least, he can be traded when a young player shows that Streit can be replaced, provided that his market value stays the same or appreciates.

He's a bottom pairing defender, at best, and a bottom-six forward...you can't pay those guys upward of 3.5-4 million a year in a cap world. Let another team over-pay for him...
I value what Streit brings to the team, but if he wants that kind of money you have to let him walk.

I think it's possible to get him a bit cheaper though.

Ozy had a good prediction, 4 years 10 million isn't bad for what he brings.

I'd max out at $2.75M per year, up to 3 years. If he wants to stay, it seems reasonable perhaps.

I know there's more money out there and if he wants to take it and leave, I don't mind that much.

I don't care all that much what we pay him. The Habs never spend to the cap in any case. Four years is too many though. I'd be much happier with two.

I am a huge fan of Streit and think we should keep him, my only concern is cap space.
Let's disregard the PP for a minute and look at it another way.

He will not be a top 6 forward as those spots are taken by:
Koivu, Kovalev, Pleks, Akost, Skost, + UFA/Ryder (Maybe)

Bottom 6:
Lapierre, Latendresse, Higgins, Kostop/Begin, Grabs, Chipchura

Defense:
Markov-Komi
Hammer-O'Byrne
Gorges- Valentenko/another kid

Where do you put him? Last I checked there wasn't a roster spot for Util in real life.

Players like him are great to have but at what price?

I say just give him the money for 2 years.

We don't need the CAP over the next 2 seasons.

$4M/2Y

Sound good?

Done.

This will give us enough cash (plus cap) to sign Price, Kostitsyn, Kostitsyn, Grabovski, Latendresse, etc, etc.

Streit won't sign a 2 year deal.

Well give him $5M per year over 2 years.

Give him $5.5M..

Who cares.. the we don't need the money for the next few years.

So give him a ******** of money so he signs.

This way, we can get him locked up. He's getting a huge payday. And the term works out best for the team.
