Jr. A SM-Liiga

I'm Canadian and trying to understand the Finnish hockey system better.

Are only Finnish-born players allowed to play in Jr. A SM-Liiga? What would the North American equivalent of this teir be?

Thanks for any help!

There are some foreign players in juniorA, so foreign players are allowed.

Finland's top juniorA league is to some extent weaker than Canadian Hockey League. Top players can move between Finnish Elite League(SM-liiga) and JR. A SM-liiga within the same organization all season long, so you rarely see the same kind of dominance in Finnish Jr. A as you see in CHL as top players usually move to play with men once they are good enough.

In a way it's like an AHL team to an NHL team.

I'd put the CHL right between SM-Liiga Sr and SM-Liiga JrA

Again... It's the player not the league that counts though

Top teams in finnish Jr. A (like JYP, Ässät & KalPa) are pretty close to top teams in CHL IMO. CHL only has much more talent.

edit. Just to clarify: Not as good obviously, but they would still do pretty well in CHL thought.
