Nordiques pick Chuck Gardiner and Dickie Moore. Gardiner might appear a bit early but the run on goaltenders is pretty big this time.

Gardiner is an excellent selection albeit probably earlier than expected. The Scouts were targeting him with the 82nd pick if we didn't trade up. Now I'm glad we did.

Are you just starting your military service, Jungosi, or is this something more tame like training for the upcoming fussbal season?

I guess I had no chance of getting Gardiner at # 85 then. He was the only goalie I really wanted so I will now follow my usual pattern of being one of the last to pick a goalie. Moore is also a damn good pick.

Agreed. I had him the only other time I participated in an ATD. He gets overshadowed on those teams a bit, but when I watch the games he always stands out.

Agreed. I made a list of my top 35 forwards before the draft and he was the last LW left.

Cook is also a good pick, I was wondering if I'd get a chance to take him. There was one of the old coaches that said Bill was better than Richard and Howe....I'll try to dig up the quote, just read it in one of my old hockey books last night. He didn't even start his NHL career until he was 30, an age that meant the end of most careers back then.

i think it was a former teammate who became a coach.

it was a hard decision. i didn't even really think of cook until today. there were about 5 players i was struggling to choose from. then moore was taken, and the other forwards didn't have the same physical element that cook does. i had planned on another D, but i picked cook since gretzky could use an elite winger, and b/c a writer once said that the soviet passing game that astonished canadians reminded him of cook and his linemates.

Chuck Gardiner's stock sure keeps rising. I selected him at #265 in draft # 6 and remember being critized for having him as my #1 goalie. In draft # 7 he went at
#120, in 8 at 89, and now at # 64. I think also he was on the championship team in one ATD.

He must have impressed scouts in his workout this time around....

I think it has to do with a couple of things

1. More teams added, more people searching for a #1 goaltender will probably push a bunch of the goalies a bit higher (the 1st couple rounders and the lower 32 not withstanding)

2. I wasn't around for the last ATD but I imagine people who draft him are making further arguments for extrapolating his career were it not for his untimely death

I'm pretty sure it was one of Bill's old linemates, actually - later a pretty good coach. I take praise exchanged between teammates with a real grain of salt. Old buddies are always blowing sunshine up each other's *****.

In ATD#8, we got to hear how Bill Cook was better than Guy Lafleur. Put that guy on a line with Newsy Lalonde and even Aki Berg couldn't ****ing stop them.

edit: not trying to rag on Bill Cook, but on the idea that what teammates say about each other is worth mentioning. Gretzky once called his goalie the best of all-time. Dunno about that one.

Ah yes it was him. I agree of course about players praising their former teammates, just throwing it out there.

They'd be good, but let's not get carried away here...

I knew Gardiner would get picked higher again this time. Great goalie with a short peak.

I updated the trades on the main page so they are standardized, doesn't it look nice.

(Yes, I'm fishing for compliments, wanna fight about it?)

The Montreal Wanderers selects Phantom Joe Malone

...That was probably the fastest pick ever.

those are 2 i was mulling over for a long time. clancy i decided was too small, despite his other great strengths.
malone is about as good offensively as lalonde, but i preferred cook for his physical play, considering cook's roughly equal level of offense.

Joe Malone

Thanks for announcing our pick Max. We are happy to bring one of the most prolific goal scorers ever to play the game on our squad.

Newsy Lalonde holds the record for the most goals scored by a professional hockey player in the first half century, Phantom Joe Malone is second.
