Habsfan18's "Taking a look back" (October 24th, 1997 edition)

Alright guys. You know the drill by now.

For those of you who don't, Basically I have a large collection of past issues of The Hockey News and I like to take out a random one and post interesting news/tidbits.

Here's a few pictures of the collection for anyone interested. It may not seem like much considering they're all piled on top of eachother in a closet..but there are over 600 issues in my collection.

-------------------------------------------------

- The issue is the October 24th, 1997 issue.

- On the cover is Edmonton's Jason Arnott. Under his picture is the following caption: "Blast Off! Jason Arnott wants to put bad times behind him."

- Gordie Howe makes pro hockey history as he plays a 47 second shift for IHL's Detroit Vipers. It marked the 6th decade in which Howe participated in.

- Ranger's Pat LaFontaine bounces back from post concussion syndrome and scores 4 goals in first 4 games back.

- Washington's Adam Oates hits 1,000 point plateau with a 5 point night vs NYI. (3 goals, 2 assists)

- Rimouski's Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, and Eric Normandin net 71 points in 8 games.

- Toronto's Mats Sundin held pointless in first 4 games of season.

- Dallas center Guy Carbonneau breaks Blues Pierre Turgeons arm with slash.

- Former Leafs GM-president Cliff Fletcher is attempting to rejoin the NHL.

- Kitchener Rangers GM Ted Ahara fired after an investigation revealed he asked 3 teenage players to partially undress at pre-draft interviews.

- 9 NHL officials, including Kerry Fraser and Bill McCreary, have been chosen to ref at the upcoming Nagano olympics.

- Returning from a serious knee injury, Montreal's Saku Koivu looks to take his place among the games elite.

- Stan Fischler names Brian Leetch the NHL's best player. (his opinion of course)

- Anaheim Mighty Ducks LW Tomas Sandstrom re-gains offensive touch on teams top line.

- Bruins rookie Joe Thornton, who was expected to be out 6-8 weeks after an injury in the pre-season, surprises team by returning 15 days after the injury.

- Chicago's Eric Weinrich, after getting a 3 year extension, hopes the US olympic selection group will choose him for the team. "I joked with some guys that I'll even be the water boy."

- Carolina's Nelson Emerson is off to one of the hottest starts of his career.

- Florida Panthers vow revenge after they feel Eric Lindros attempted to injure Rob Niedermayer on opening night.

- Kings head coach Larry Robinson "not amused" with his teams slow start. The Kings managed to fall behind in each of their first 5 games.

- Montreal's Marc Bureau feels he deserves a contract extension, because he's been patient with the team.

- Bitter Devil Bill Guerin (currently in a holdout) demands a trade from the team. New Jersey is not willing to oblige.

- New York Islanders sophmore Bryan Berard sets a goal for himself. To be a point per game player this season and finish with 82 points. He currently has 4 points in 3 games.

- Sens goaltender Damian Rhodes on road back after losing his number 1 spot to Ron Tugnutt in the teams first ever playoff birth last season.

- Rangers goalie Mike Richter gives up his first ever penalty shot goal. He was 7-7 on penalty shots throughout his career. The man to break the streak..former teammate Doug Weight.

- After hearing about his demotion, Coyotes Shane Doan proceeds to shatter many of his sticks. Doan had played 139 NHL games without ever playing in the minors.

- After missing all but 5 games last season, Pens Tom Barrasso back in the fold and is the teams top goaltender.

- Western Michigan's Joe Corvo is an MVP candidate from the blueline.

- Chris Drury turns down an offer from Colorado to stay at BU.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry if this version wasn't the best..I guess I didn't pick an interesting issue this time lol

Wasn't it that year, that Guerin and Arnott were traded for each other?

My particular favorite headlines. Everthing in bold sounds hilarious. Tsn got nothing on these headlines.

You know, I never really thought of that. That's a good idea. I'll start doing that with the next edition.

And to everyone who thanks me for doing these, it's my pleasure

I love these threads, thanks Habsfan18!

It's painful to be reminded of Saku's injuries and that career that could have been.

Edit: let's not make this thread into a Habs vs Sens pissing match...

Hockey News 2009:

After hearing about his demotion, Canadians Guillaume Latendresse proceeds to shatter many of his sticks. Latendresse had played 139 NHL games without ever playing in the minors. He is expected to be called back up once he's 20lbs lighter.
