Thats kind of what I was thinking as soon as Detroit passed on him. As soon as they passed I said ok, he is there for the picking tomorrow. One of the hosts, I forget which one, kept throwing this name out saying I couldnt believe he was still available and would have gone sooner had the Tanguay trade not happened. Now I dont know about any of you, but if we pass on a guy like this and take a Defenseman, I am really going to pissed, especially after the trade yesterday.

Deschamps is good, but he's not the clear cut BPA IMO. I don't think he absolutely has to be picked at the next spot, and I think he was rated a little high by CSB to begin with. I wouldnt be terribly upset if we picked him, but I dont really think we should. We need d-men and goalies in the system. I say Ness or Markstrom.

We really couldnt go wrong with Niemi. Really good two way defender with size and really solid offensive instincts. And like you said, he has a howitzer from the blueline. Put up great numbers in the WHL.

I call David Carle, matt's little brother and also a d-man, as our next pick.

I just read before on the NHL Entry Draft thread that David Carle is not going to be playing hockey anymore because of a heart condition.

Florida trades up to #46 with Phoenix and takes C. Robak.

Robak!!!!! Good pick, I forgot about him. Big, good skater, good skill, moves the puck well. High upside. I like both of these picks a lot.

I hope we didn't give up too much to move up. Hopefully our 7th and not our 4th.

I'm very happy with the Robak pick. I was frustrated with the goalie at first, but since we got Robak anyways I'm happy.

Now hopefully Stone lasts until we pick next.

I wish they would announce the picks in the trades after day 1.

That's a joke right?

Because Shantz was really going to do tons for this organization...

Oh wait, same with Plante. Plante sucked it up big time in the AHL. Couldnt hold the #1.

Both are completely useless goaltending prospects and besides that one russian, this was a very smart move.

Colby Robak - Smooth skating, calm, finesse offensive defenseman with plenty of size he doesn't put to use.

He's a bit of a project, but his upside is immense IMO. I personally think he's going to turn out really well. He has GREAT tools, he just needs to find a toolbox. Alex Pietrangelo, who St. Louis took #4 overall, is also very laidback, that was a major concern with some scouts, and he really needs to improve his defensive play a lot. Pietrangelo really lacks intensity at the moment, I think Robak is definitely more 'intense'. Pietrangelo also has more size than Robak and still doesn't use his body at all either to his advantage. But the feeling out there in some of the scouting community is that Pietrangelo will put it all together, and he's alreadyb good enough and his upside is substantial enough that he's worth being picked at that spot. I think the same applies for Robak. Ellerby was supposedly a project last year when we picked him, and he had a REALLY good season and it looks like he will turn out to be a good one. I like the pick.

Nevermind, from GRs blog:

-- Panthers make a move, giving Phoenix back the No. 49 pick to move up to No. 46. Florida also surrendered a fourth round pick in 2009 for that honor.

Oh krap. 2009 is going to be twice as good as this year's draft. I dont like this. They must have REALLY liked Robak.

Kind of disappointed we took a D here, I wanted a forward. But Comrie was a riser late in the season, and for this spot I think this is VERY GOOD value. Supposedly a really big, strong, shutdown type with a high upside. Can't complain really, was just hoping for a forward. But we did need to address defense in this draft.
