I think in the worst case scenario we should just keep what we got but resign everyone between 3-5 years. If the cap does indeed rise as high as its supposed to, that should be more than doable.
Jokinen? You have to figure that FLA is going to ask for the moon, especially after the Loungo trade. Smid and Stoll plus ANA's first is not enough to get you Jokinen. They'll ask for roster players - guys like Hemsky, Gagner, Cogliano. If they decide to trade him there will be several teams lining up to get him. The reason I see Smid expendable is that I'm not sure he's going to be better than Grebs or Gilbert. When you look at the blueline propects the have in the minors, it makes it easier to part with him. I also see a package of Torres and Smid getting us a better draft pick, not top 10 mind you.
I think that price for Jokinen is very high but they will trade him anyway. coach is pissed off that his captain has not lead the team to the playoffs. Package to put together to get Jokinen is very similar to what Stars put together to get Richards.
Top6 forward/top4 dmen(=Smid)+3rd line forward(=Stoll) + top prospect(Schremp)/Anaheims pick.
This should land Jokinen if not we keep our boys and see what they can do.
Deal Raffi Torres for draft picks or prospects (not wanting to take on salary). The alternative would be making a deal involving Torres, Stoll + for a top 6 winger (though I'm not sure what they'd fetch, and I also already like our top 6 when Horc returns).
We have one defenseman too many and Mathieu Roy on a one-way deal next season. Something's probably gotta give (even if we can afford to bury Roy in the minors it's not the optimal solution. I'd rather he were the extra guy in the PB).
I don't think we can deal Roli, and as back-ups go he's okay. He is overpaid, but at the same time you could argue that Garon is underpaid. Seeing as their deals are up at the same time it kinda evens out.
Assuming the cap goes up to the $56M suggested earlier, that's not so bad, and some deals might well be heftier than the numbers I've used. I really don't feel the need to add a single player, but let this group keep gelling and improve on the stretch run.

Stop hating on Smid and just accept the growing pains, he's only 22. I think in a couple of years Smid could turn out to be the shutdown dman, sort of like Volchenkov. Only way I deal him is if he part of a package for a star not a second round draft pick.
I'm not hating on Smid. Read the posts before. Because of our depth at D plus the prospects we have, we can afford to trade him. He's the only one that has any value (that we can or want to trade). You will not get a star player for him. Be realistic.
Why the heck does everyone wanna trade Smid or Greene? These are YOUNG GUYS who play a tough physical position. It's the hardest position to learn and play, and it takes time. Not many guys just jump in and dominate. If we bring any new guys up to fill these spots, we're gonna have growing pains that are hopefully in the past now!

I think you've got a pretty good opening-game lineup there...
For cap-space, could we not just buyout Roli's last year and swallow the portion of capspace that would be left behind?
Then we could use JDD as the backup and give plenty of wiggle room...but on the other hand, messing with this group's chemistry would be terrible.
I believe it will depend entirely on how the RFA and UFA signings go. I'm not yet entirely sold that we need a Hossa-type player if the young guys continue to play exceptionally well.
However, we do need to lose a player or two to solidify the lineup (Torres, possibly Stoll, let Reasoner walk, but I suspect he'll get another contract). If there's the cap-space I'd love to see them give Garon a big fat raise as well, just to be safe.

I'm quite sure you can't do that. Since he signed when over 35 he'll count no matter what (unless we trade him, of course).

It's because we're overcrowded, and as you suggest yourself these are young guys. That will mean continued growing pains. I don't think we deal them to bring in a new guy, just to have a more clear-cut top six for now.
Besides the obvious defensive lapses, this team requires a Selke winner type forward that is in his prime. Defense wins cups, but with defensive forwards too. We can't always rely on our defenseman/goalie to stop a guy from scoring, we need to shut down other teams when they hit the neutral zone.
All in all I am okay with not making the playoffs, we didn't quite deserve to be there because of October to December. Great job of impressing the hell out of me in
2008, "the kids are alright".

IMO we need a big, mean, shutdown defencemen significantly more than we need a potential Selke type up front. Horcoff is a top 10-20 defensive forward in the league and we have other guys who are very solid as well. What we lack is a shutdown defencemen. Think Scott Hannan in the 04? playoffs when he shut down all those stars. Think Shea Weber at the 2005 World Juniors. Think Chris... urghhh I'll stop there.
Well, that equals 56.595, so we're about 4 mil too high for me. How do extensions work though? Garon might not be able to get an extension until after the new year anyway right? For the first time I could see how Stoll may get moved. Also, I'd try to move Staios, and my contract estimates are probably on the high side. I obviously moved Mr. Torres along. I don't see how he fits on this team. We're going to have too many guys as it is, then I added a top-flight forward.

That team could win the whole shootin match.
NOTE: * - Extended, ** - New Deal
Money says that team isn't going to work. You can't have a 2 million dollar player playing your 4th line. You cant have a 2.7 million dollar player being your 5-6 Dman. You can't have a 4.25 million dollar player playing on your 3rd line. Something is going to have to give. I see us more trimming players than adding. There is no room for Hossa on this team without getting rid of something significant.

If you fit within the cap, of course you can. Why not?
