Anyone who remembers that summer knows that there were slight rumblings that Gretzky was going to be traded for weeks leading up to the event. I dismissed those rumors completely, I wouldn't even take the time to read the short blubs that kept appearing in the papers because I was so certain that they were false. It's hard not to wonder sometimes if things would have gone differently today simply because of the way information is so quickly gathered, dissected, and distributed. Instead of a few short articles in the paper you would have had a mass explosion of reaction from both the mainstream media (which is far, far greater today) and public opinion responses (like blogs and messageboards). I think even Pocklington was taken by surprise by just how vicious the backlash would be after he sold Gretz. Maybe he might have thought twice about it if the media and fans roasted him over the coals for weeks before it was too late. Just a thought...
Yes there were rumours about him going to the Canucks about a couple weeks earlier, and Gretzky was very pissed about it. I think he uttered an expletive when he was told he may be going to Vancouver.
Actually, this video hits me more than the game 7 intro... Oilers had just come back from two very rough outings in Carolina, down 2-0, starting goalie gone for the series, and pretty demoralized. The lucky ******** who had tickets to this game fired that team up like an adrenaline shot to the heart, and they stormed back to take the series to 7 games.
Man, I wish I'd been there.
wow... one of my all time best and proudest moments no doubt!
I shed a tear or 2 tonight. Watching the post game interviews, everyone was so heartbroken you would think they just lost game 7 of the SCF. That's what it felt like for me when we lost, game 7 all over again. It sure had the atmosphere and the importance of the game.
After game 7 in the 06 run I welled up quite a bit. I'm a little embarrassed, but also when Smyth was at the airport crying that choked me up as well.

It was amazing. I will never forget it, seeing the Stanley Cup finals logo on the ice and banners, it was almost surreal. Nothing is more exciting than being in Rexall place during a playoffs game, never mind the friggin finals!
