Howson ranked as the 25th best GM

or the 6th worse if you want to look at it that way. Rankings were done by the Hockey News, not me.

They say this about the ranking and Howson.

Quote:
The 47 yeard old former Oilers assistant GM, who took over a Columbus club seemingly in constant turmoil, will undoubtedly grow into his role as the boss. His inability to get Brad Richards at the trade deadline hurt his cause. All he could get for Sergei Fedorov was a marginal prospect.
The only GMs ranked worse were Larry Pleau, Dean Lombardi, Don Waddell, Kevin Lowe, and Jay Feaster.

I am not sure there is much to disagree with here. But the "sample size" is rather limited. SH has not done much so far. Does not mean he will do nothing in the next year. I do not detect in him the deadly combination of arrogance and stupidity that defined Maclean.

Is this surprising considering Jackets ranking? No, Hitch will get same kind of ranking. Such rankings means squat.

He'll move up as the Blue Jackets improve next year.

well, heck, our GM ranking is up four places from last year without benefit of any significant trade additions or signings to our team. I imagine that bodes well for our GM and franchise in the future.

I wasn't impressed with their rankings.

"Inability to get Richards" ????

Give me a break, he didn't get Richards because Tampa wanted the goalie. It's that simple.

25th is close to matching our league seeding, hopefully he's not rated 25 this time next season.

I'm not concerned where he is ranked this year.

Next year, I'll look more into it.

Who cares no one reads Hockey News anyway.

More people read Eklund after the trade deadline.

And yet K-Lowe will suddenly look like a genius if Penner takes his team to the playoffs. These rankings don't mean anything. Its the standings that count. We need to move up in them next year.

And from what I've heard about the Fedorov deal, Howson was mancrushing Ted Ruth, which may have sweetened that deal for SH anyway.

Anybody else seeing the correlation between the standings & the GM rankings? Kinda easy to say a GM's 25th best when his team's 25th.

A lot of truth to what you're saying DKB.... Being ranked 25th is a P.R. problem, regardless if it is true. We've heard how important it is to prospective Free Agents that we're a team and town on the move.

Oilers fan here.

I have to agree with you on this one. The price to pay was likely to high, so Howson chose not to take it. I'd say the decision makes him a better GM, rather than a weak one. The Hockey News knows nothin'.

Thanks for Glencross, by the way. How's Dicky Tarnstrom doing over there?

Tarnstrom has done what he was brought here to do, transition between zones. He has created some offense and put up points. He likely won't be re-signed this off-season, so I haven't got a lot of interest invested in Tarnstom.

I'm not disappointed in his play, but I haven't been wowed either.

Dicky T is like everyone else that comes in here. At first he looked like he was going to be a real difference maker, but then he cools off and the sharks start circling and people start picking his game apart.

Overall I'd say he has been a solid contribution, but we have so many other holes that it's hard to say.

I have a subscription to the hockey news and love reading it, but rankings like this are just opinion to provoke thought, so who really cares?

You think if Howson would have finished first we could have gotten a banner to hang alongside the #1 fan experience banner. Collect enought BS banners and maybe it will take the place of a divsion or stanley cup banner

In my opinion, he gets an incomplete. I have been a season ticket holder since day one, so I know its tough to be a little patient since we have sucked for so long, but this guy needs more than one year before he can be fully judged. I think there are already indications that he is going to be very good. So far I have been encouraged by his moves and non-moves. A few that give me encouragement......

*Picked up Hejda, Novotny, and Peca for essentially nothing.
*Drafted Voracek, Legion, Mayorov, etc.
*Traded Platt for Rome/Wilson to help D Depth.
*Didnt give up the farm (Leclaire) for Richards but was in the conversation for one of the biggest catches of the trade deadline.
*Wouldnt overpay for Foote and got a great return, yes a great return for him.
*Dumped Fedorovs salary.

Look at where we are right now......

*A team whose roster screams 15th in the conference, 30th in the league, yet was in the hunt until after the all star break. If we would have just split with Nashville or won 1/2 of our OT/Shootout games, we would be in the thick of things. Point being, we are not that far off.
*Young kids that get better each year.
*Two first round picks in a stocked draft year.
*A number of young players that could be used as assets in trades.
*Depedending on our own UFA/RFA signings, anywhere from 15 to 20 million to spend in the offseason.
*No more bloated multi year contracts hanging over our head.

I cant wait to see what he does this off-season, but this is the best I have ever felt about this teams chances for next year.

We got nothing for Feds, and we could have made a move for J.M Liles or Andrew Brunette in exchange for Foote, rather than another, ANOTHER, pick.

Peca, Hejda, and Tarnstrom were his best moves imo. Hockey News has the rating about right really, he could stand to be a little higher, but until he makes some good off season pick ups, I'm neutral on him.

Nothing for Feds?

Do you think that if Howson asked super duper nice that Giguere would have gave us Liles? No. The Avs weren't going to give up roster players. They were priming for the playoffs. We got above market value for Foote.

Neutral eh? I think you are parked way south of neutral based on your Howson comments for the last few weeks.

Seriously.
The 1st round pick for Footer could turn out to be the deal of the century.

Probably got a little bit less than market for Feds because of his recent concussion, but if the Caps don't go to the playoffs, Howson will look good on that one too.

"Parked south of neutral" ...is that some sort of Halifaxism?

I feel better times are coming for Columbus. I know it's been a long time (I'm a Leaf fan, I know what it means to be REALLY patient), but I think this team is pretty close. You have some pretty impressive kids coming up soon, so I think things will start to look a lot better, a lot sooner than you think.
