April 1st: Are the Rangers a better team than one year ago?

Last year the 1st of April had the Rangers in the mix to make the playoffs, but they had to make a pretty impressive run just to get in.

This year on April 1st the Rangers need 4 points to make the playoffs with 4 games left. Actually they could back in to the playoffs if other teams lose but you get the point.

Are they any better than they were last year at this point?

IMO in some ways yes, in some ways no.

What do you think?

I'll vote yes. Only because we're younger!

With adding Drurey and Gomez in the offseason, the payoffs could come in the playoffs. YAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

I was trying to remember last season and there were several teams fighting to get in right down to the wire, the Rangers slightly ahead of that bubble.

Isles, Montreal, Leafs

Once again they are slightly ahead of that bubble if that... As I type I'm rooting for the Sabres to beat the Bruins.

Yes, we're a better team but we are not "there" yet.

This is a ltransition year and I'm not expecting "big things" in the playoffs. On the other hand the Eastern Conf, is pretty much up for grabs so anything is possible.

I think we will jettison Jagr after this season and look to add a power forward that can bang in the corners and down-low in the slot, and give us the 30 ugly goals that have been sorely missing this season.

I really think we are very close to having all the pieces of the puzzle, though someone on D is going to have to step up and give us a threatening shot from the point.

I think the East as a whole became more competitive. So IMO, yes, we're a better team but at the same time the other East teams got better too which makes it appear like we haven't improved much. If that makes any sense...

On paper yes, in Reality, no. Last year the Rangers had a supremely dominant first line with Straka Nylander Jagr. THis year they struggle to score any goals unless Renney actually keeps Avery Dubi Jagr together.

This year they have the potential for more depth, but that isn't the case when the first line isn't together.

I agree with Orts fan, but I also think there is a little more faith and trust in this team because of their history and that great point streak we had this season.

I think I have to agree. This team may look very different next year imo.

Minus Jagr, Straka, Shanny

Stragrlander was broken up for the second half of the season.

I like what Dubinsky and Dawes have done... so yes

I expected at least a season like last year from Jagr though... and have been disappointed.

Heading into the playoffs there is no doubt I would rather have this team. We had what was basically a one line team last year in the playoffs and that cost us. This year we can role 3 lines pretty smoothly.

I think we're better.

We don't have any 2 players/line that will consistently be as dangerous offensively as Jagr and Nylander were. But everywhere else we're probably better, at least by a little.

Ultimately I think this years team is stronger at Center

Gomez, Drury, Dubi > Nylander and Cullen

I've been real impressed at Staals overall play but he is a rookie and prone to rookie mistakes. Staal and Girardi have at times been our best D men. 2 rookies being the best D men worries me going into the playoffs.

It will be a great learning experience for them. Thats a positive and shouldnt be overlooked. Still....

I feel like we have been a better team especially with all the mix up with players and lines.

Last year was the text book example of a team coming together, with every cylander firing. Everything went right from February on and the record shows that.

This season we aren't quite underachieving. The parts are better but the chemistry isn't. If we get hot in the post season we can make it to the conference finals without a doubt. If we play like we have been lately, we might not make it out of the first. I think we can stumble into the 2nd round but that's as far as we go unless everything gets tighter out there.

Oh well, another stepping stone towards the future. It'll be interesting to see if any of the young guys try to fill the void and be the go to guy when the stakes get raised.
