He's a likable guy but he is not right for this team, main reason is inconsistent team effort and underachievement from their "top" players. I don't see this changing next season.
It does the Isles no good to have great years from Richard Park or Mike Sillinger. We need our top players to be great and Nolan has not been able to get that in any way.
Our top vets or best forwards (Satan, Comrie, Guerin, Fedotenko, Vasicek) have had very sub-par years offensively. Our best young players seem to develop very slowly (Bergenheim - much better lately!, Tambellini) or pushed out (Nilsson)
The only exceptions have been Comeau, Gervais and Campoli (leaving out Okposo for now) and these players will not bring a playoff or a cup next year alone.
Also, it irks me to think that DP is not happy with Nolan since he carried this team on his back and is the only reason they aren't dead last this year (wouldn't be so bad in this draft though). We have cap room and we need to feel confident that if we bring in a talent or potential scorer (Hossa, Langkow, Nagy, Demitra, etc) that they can have great years and not deteriorate like Satan has.

Not sure if Nolan's the guy to steer this ship.
If you were truly expecting Vasicek and Fedotenko, and Satan to become "great" that may be part of the problem in the way you are seeing things. The fact that these guys are our "top" players should give you hint to what is wrong with the team at the current time.
A second part of the problem with your logic is the belief that there is any coach in the history of hockey who could trun Vasicek and Fedotenko into "great" players.
And, a the final nail in the coffin for your post is the suggestion that guys like Nagy or Demitra could come to the Island, have "great" seasons, and rescue us.
You are new, so we should all cut you a break. But, please try to be a bit more realistic in your expectations.
So in your opinion, the problem with the Isles isn't that they are built around the likes of Guerin, Fedotenko, Vasicek, etc....but that Nolan isn't magically making those guys first line scorers.
And this is why Isles fans are continually laughed at.
Why?
Just because we want to replace Wade Dubielewicz with Freddy Brathwaite, replace Ted Nolan with Jack Capuano, KEEP Garth Snow because he's as good as any NHL GM out there and pay Yashin to not score on a league worst offense doesn't make Isles fans a joke.

Well, they're not laghed at by other Isles fans.
...but Garth Snow has an MBA!
I know that for some reason this has become an unpopular opinion in these parts recently, but if you're looking for somewhere to point a finger for the Isles problems this season look no further than Chairman Wang. He created the dysfunctional atmosphere that scares free agents and top executives away, he came up with the genius idea to pick Garth Snow off the bench and make him the head yes man in charge, and he has final say on every single ****ed up decision this franchise makes.
Yeah he puts money into the team and I appreciate that, but his actions have had major negative consequences in the construction of this stinker of a team.

Simply stunning.
Just a question for the masses of ***** who want Nolan gone for not practicing voodoo well enough to make Comrie an NHL calibre puckhandler:
Did Al Arbour almost lose with this team healthy?
I say we take his banner down to be fair because he wasn't dominating with this roster, either.
Yes, lets rid ourselves of one of the best coachs in the NHL and also one of the three most important people to the future of our organization! It can only make things better..

What are you talking about? Dubielewicz is just as good as DiPietro remember? He should be the starter.

I hope Nolan gets a 3-4 yr extension.
Newsday says both Nolan and DiPietro laughed about the rumor from the Canadian press, that they are clashing.I think Nolan's exactly the type of coach that's good for DiPietro. He's called DiPietro out when he wanders to far from his net and when he's overplaying the puck.
and while I think Nolan was slower then Snow and Wang,to come around to the idea of giving the youngsters more icetime, more responsibilty,I'm pleased with the way the younger Isles have responded to Nolan's coaching.

AMEN!!!!!!!!! The finger needs to be pointed at CHAIRMAN WANG!!! His meddling is why the organization is viewed so negatively.
It's a downward spiral to overpay for players, either by trade or free agency, bring them here to have sub par seasons, deteriorating any value they have through poor output. The result is what we see: Luongo, Jokinen, Palffy, Bertuzzi, McCabe leaving us with almost nothing. This cannot be changed easily and certainly Nolan is not to blame, but I hate the fact that players come into this organization only to deteriorate.
Are any of the players that are on this roster now worth MORE than when they got here?
With the exception of Jason Blake, maybe Viktor Kozlov (whom they got nothing for), players seem to come to NYI for career death. The only excpetions on this roster are Brendan Witt, who's truly great. No free agents want to come to a team to have their career die.
I'd like to believe Nolan can get more from talented players rather than Sillinger and Park.

Alright, I have a feeling this thread's going into the toilet very quickly. That said, I want to address some points from the OP:

The problem isn't so much Nolan, but more that the Isles do not have "top" players. When Mike "career high 60 point" Comrie and Miro "mafia knees" Satan are your "top" players, is it any wonder the Isles don't score?

The fact that former spare parts like Park and Hilbert have found important niches to fill is a better testament to the coach than the failings of questionable "best forwards" like an injured Satan, average Comrie and Fedotenko (the latter of whom is a clutch playoff performer but has never been a great regular-season threat), aging Guerin, and Vasicek who has never even done anything to justify being a top-six guy. Bergenheim is a horrible example since he wasn't even here for Nolan's first of two whole years and Nilsson being "pushed out" (like so much feces ) doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Nolan.

Not seeing what this has to do with getting rid of Nolan either, and on paper the Isles' pre-injury roster isn't bringing anyone playoffs or a Cup this year or any other year, either. Seeing as how they hung around a playoff spot until about a month ago, even in spite of all the injuries, your point is dulled even further. The play of DiPietro is obviously a huge part of their earlier success (if you can call it that), but without most of the players buying into Nolan's system they'd have been much worse off all year.

This is just another Internet rumor based mostly upon a response to a legitimate piece of criticism after a bad game. Nothing else I've seen lends any credence to this fable.
It's simply unfathomable to me that people want to blame the coach for this season's outcome. The roster was marginal going into the season and has ended up being one of the most injury-riddled in the league, yet it's the coach's fault the Isles are a lottery team... LOL. I'm not saying Nolan is perfect or anything, but if there's a list of 100 problems this team has, he's around #95.
What are you talking about? Dubielewicz is just as good as DiPietro remember? He should be the starter.
NO!!!!!
NO ONE is as good as my favorite Hippy. NO ONE!!!
Dubie is awful and has better stats and does the job as backup awfully and doesn't play a conventional butterfly and his stats are misleading while under the Hippy Hippy Shake but that only means he has to go.....we NEED Freddy Brathwaite or Felix Potvin!

Fallacy of saliency here. It only seems that free agents don't perform up to expectations only here, but that's not true. UFA's as a whole often don't perform up to expectations because by the time they reach UFA status (and are affordable), they're on the downside of their careers. For example: Jason Blake, Adrian Aucoin.
But no player on this team has significantly underperformed. Comrie has been what he's always been, Guerin is on a natural career slope, Vasicek and Fedetenko were mediocre players to begin with. And while I like Witt, if Witt is "truly great", Geral Diduck should be a top-15 Islander of all time.
This team was shallow with mediocre talent on the backline. They performed to many people's reasonable expectations. They've actually exceeded my expectations. (But people think I'm negative...)
Isles fans just cant be happy with what they got. We have a great coach and we want him gone YIKES.
First get some one on here who is a playmaker, then wonder why your scorers are scoring. Maybe they arent guys who make space for themselves (very few scorers do that only top notch) and no one can make that space for them.

How could anyone do better. Thats not to say I think Nolan will go down as one of the greatest coaches ever but Not even Arbour or Bowman could have done better with what we have and what has transpired this year. I'd go as far as saying he cost us Stamkos keeping in the running right up to the deadline when we really had no business being there.
I think that witt and sillinger have better Value now then when they did in the past.
Witt brought his game here and did well.....not as well as in the past....
Sillinger came off a 32 goal season when he came here and went onto 26 goals and an injury riddled 14 with this Wangerrific squad. His value has been higher but his intangeables are what make him still worth anything after 2 years in purgatory.
This team was shallow with mediocre talent on the backline. They performed to many people's reasonable expectations. They've actually exceeded my expectations. (But people think I'm negative...)
Well done, laddy! [/SNL Connery]
I actually expected this team to make the POs - not because they have a bunch of underrated stars but because of Nolan's ability to make chicken salad out of horseapples - and I think if DiPietro and a few other key guys (Witt, Sillinger, Satan) had stayed 100% through the year, they would have.
Newsday says both Nolan and DiPietro laughed about the rumor from the Canadian press, that they are clashing.I think Nolan's exactly the type of coach that's good for DiPietro. He's called DiPietro out when he wanders to far from his net and when he's overplaying the puck.

Maybe you're pleased because Nolan demanded they earn more icetime and they started to earn it? I recall Comeau getting nice ice time all along with Tamby (poor persecuted Tamby....) not?
But we agree with Nolan being the right guy for this club. The media hooplah I believe was all Wang and Snow wanted and exactly what Ted Nolan loathed.
Chucky Cheese and his MBA have to have control, apparently, and Nolan I guess balks and yields the control when necessary.
I'm bitter. I'm disappointed that Nilsson looks like a budding offensive star in Edmonton, that Satan can't play, that Fedotenko and Vasicek suck, that Guerin's getting old, there are no free agents to really help and that we have no potential stars on the horizon besides maybe Okposo. Seems like all those poor seasons and high draft choices hasn't brought a contender or a real future.
Having said that, I really like Hunter, Comeau, Okposo, Bergenheim - I hope Nielsen, Tambellini and Collition can develop into NHL players and I'm optimistic Gervais and Campoli can be much better next season to balance Witt, Martinek and Sutton.
Maybe next year will be better. Nolan or no Nolan.
