Nash to Move To Center???

I'm posting this story because it was dated yesterday, I hope the fans aren't getting RickRolled....

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/15500-NHL-Columbus_Blue_Jackets-Rick_Nash_Moving_to_Center_For_08-09_Campaign_

Quote:
Ken Hitchcock recently called in to Phil Esposito and Jim Tatti on XM’s Home Ice, channel 204, to discuss Blue Jackets hockey.

During the conversation the obvious subject of Rick Nash was brought up. Both Espo and Tatti raved about the young power forward's skill set and asked what the fans could be treated to next year. The Blue Jackets' bench boss surprised the radio tandem when he revealed that he’s asked Rick Nash to consider a position change from left wing to center ice for next season.

Hitch’s reasoning was that with Nash’s hands, size, and vision he could be as effective as San Jose’s towering number one center, Joe Thornton.

According to Hitchcock, Nash is still apprehensive about this change, but did promise his coach that he would mull over the suggestion during the summer months.

Very interesting.

I think with Rick's Mad Skillz, he could easily make that transition.

Anybody else think this sounds like a dumb idea?
Nash is a breakaway artist. He's needs to GET the outlet pass, NOT make the outlet pass. Z is the better choice (and we know how that turned out).

And this doesn't jive with the published reports that we're going after a #1 Center.
...or was that just more snowblowing again?

Someone mentioned this conversation a few weeks back. I still thinks its a dumb idea. Zherdev at center kind of made sense. Nash, in my opinion, doesn't. He's not a natural playmaker, he's a shooter. Beyond that, if Nash is at center...that means the team hasn't acquired the centers it needs.

Don't like this one bit.

It doesn't make sense for another reason: why in the world would this be a change made for next season, and not sampled for the rest of the games this season? If the answer is "because Nash would need a lot of time to fit into the role," please, Hitch, don't waste time even trying it next season. Nash should be focusing on other things, like being the MVP all year and not just after the trade deadline.

Speaking of April Fools: I wish it was a joke that Spring quarter started today

So, based on some of the rumors we've heard so far about this offseason, we are/were looking at Nash as the #1 center and Dan Cleary as a top 6 winger.

Not the type of "major upgrade" I was hoping for this summer.

While I'm not in favor of the idea, I don't think this has anything to do with whether we're going after a #1 center. We obviously will be. If this isn't a joke, it's just Hitch being Hitch. Hitch and Howson might consult each other, but when one speaks it isn't as though the other is.

And I'm off for class.

Modin, Vyborny, Zherdev = all awesome centers. Time for Rick to move in the middle, folks.

Exactly. Since Hitch has been named coach of team Canada, maybe he can try this little experiment in the upcoming tourney vs. waiting for next season. It will take too long into the season to find out it doesn't work and we will once again be chanting, "Maybe next year."

I gotta agree with the majority here... don't like this one bit.

It would obviously meant we struck out on centers this offseason and to me that is not an option. We can't leave this offseason without a couple of new players down the middle.

If they really don't land at least one good center it's definitely time to break out the torches and pitchforks.

I bet he won't take that kind of risk with a gold medal on the line. And he shouldn't take it with our playoff hopes next season either.

As someone suggested above, does Hitchcock think every forward = center?

I believe we can call what he is doing "grasping at straws".

I have absolutely no problem with this if Nash is comfortable. Nash is the best playmaker on the team and he'll likely be a better playmaker than any center we bring in.

This was the point of my theory about Nash and Hossa. I'm glad Hitch appears to agree.

If he can win face-offs or we can find a decent winger who can, this might be a genius move. It's risky, but I like it.

Nope. See Brule and Fritsche.

Apparently that was a replay from a while ago.

Hitch is supposed to be on XM today @ 3 p.m though -- I'm sure to discuss Team Canada.

Hitch would never make this kind of decision or announcement this early nor do I think Nash is a good enough skater to be a center, you really need to be able to blanket the ice as a center and Nash is just not that strong for long periods of time, he is a great skater in bursts but you need more speed for longer periods as a center. It would also take away some of his effectiveness as a power forward along the boards. NOT HAPPENING!

I guess I'm nuts, but I don't equate our lack of success with Nash's productivity or designated position on the ice. There are so many other areas this team can easily and more directly upgrade in.

1. Puck moving defenseman
2. PP conversion(see 1.)
3. Quality of our middle roster(we've been dressing 2 AHL lines for the last month)
4. Veteran leadership

GM'ing for Dummies:

To fix the above 1-4, follow these steps in this off season. Go get an elite defenseman for 7-8 million, and a few couple veteran forwards with a preference towards centers. Trade draft picks and a couple prospects for a capable centerman.

Nash is being utilized pretty well on the ice, don't tweak that Hitch.

I wish I could tell you that it was a joke because I don't know, that's why I posted my little disclaimer at the top. I absolutely hate April Fools day. I just want information to be accurate and reliable.
