I knew people would jump on Staios for that. If Pitkanen would tie up his man properly Staios wouldn't have had to come over. I watched the replay just focusing on Pitkanen and he had zero position and wasn't even making contact with his man. Staios may have been wrong to leave his guy open but Pitkanen's defensive zone coverage was just as bad.
It was a great late season push and the team has done it without key veteran elements injured out.The Oilers has been very resilient, and the flashes of brillance demonstrated by young players will generate a lot of hope and promise for the future. This season shouldn't even be considered as a disappointment with the numerous circumstances taken into account.
Congrats Oiler fans. With the right modifications, some qualified people hired in key positions and the progression/emergence of your young key players and solid performance by important veterans, the playoffs should be early reached.Step by step.
The Refs should get a star tonight. Kipper and Nolan should be the others.
When will the refs stop costing the Oilers games? The refs are the reason the Oilers aren't making it. The NHL hates Edmonton and have hated them since Slats left. Ever since Slats left, the Oilers have been getting the short end of the stick by the zebras. I'm getting sick of this garbage.
I can't see the Oilers having less injuries next season as the opposition will still be allowed to do cheapshots and get away with it without getting suspended. Until the NHL starts suspending players for cheapshots on Oilers players that cause injury, it will get worse and the Oilers have more injuries. Had those Flyers done those same cheapshots against an Oilers player, 200% guarantee, they wouldn't have been suspended. The NHL wouldn't even have looked at the incidents. There were at least 5 or 6 incidents that were suspendable but the NHL turns a blind eye when it comes to suspending players cheapshotting Oilers players causing serious injury.
There's apparantly a rule that says, cheapshot an Oilers player all you want and take liberties all you want as there won't be a suspension or fine forthcoming, not even a penalty.

I don't know how anyone can consider this season a disappointment. The team showed absolutely no quit, there are 8 good young players to be excited about (Nilsson, Gagner, Cogliano, Gilbert, Grebeshkov, Pitkanen, Glencross, Brodziak). Even Smid and Greene took steps forward.
The team will learn from their mistakes.
We'll be back in the playoffs next year.
Agreed. Garon, Horcoff and Hemsky (+/- ? Souray) are enough to keep the above wunderkinds inspired, mentored and in line. No angst this summer, for the first time in ages... except: Can MacT coach a team to play consistent, solid hockey all year long?

if that's not the pot calling the kettle black, then I don't know what is...
I'm really liking our team going forward.. 1 veteran top 6 forward and 1 veteran top 4 defenseman besides Horc and Souray should make us a playoff team for sure barring another 300+ man games lost to injury to key players. I just wish we could move Roloson especially for another serviceable, cheaper backup but I doubt that will happen.
Excellent game - not the best execution by either team but great to watch!!!
How did Phaneuf get so wide open for the point shot? Blown coverage and I won't blame Roli for giving up a bad rebound on that one.
Makes you wish Greene and several others would hit the net with their point shots. If you get enough shots through, eventually one will end up with a good rebound opportunity.
Anyways, keep it going in Vancouver then train like mad in the summer Oilers!!
I agree. Stoll is done as an Oiler. Not an ouch of improvement from game 1.
I'd love for JDD, Schremp, Trukhno to play the last game if possible. Give Hemsky a rest because of his knee(? - looked like a bad slash by Aucoin).
I hope to god he is done as an oiler. A trade of stoll, torres, roloson needs to be orchestrated. I would keep staios. His contract is dirt cheap and he does bring an intagible in his leadership and that he is a veteran. WIthout him we would be the youngest team by a longshot. Cureently colombus is by 2 days.
Torres, stoll, roloson, and anaheims first to just move up in the draft to a top ten or for a player of half decent value who doesnt want to resign next year or whatever would be more than fine with me. I hate him I hate him i want him to die. I am so angry so angry so angry
**** ***** balls ass **** I am so mad
good season from the boys, raised alot of eyebrows, and they really proved down the stretch that this team will be a contender next year.
On a side note, I say we take this chance to do the flames a favour and book them a tee-off time about a week after we hit the links. Might as well be neighbourly
Is there anyone who does not want to give GlenX a 3 year contract at $1.5 million per season...........
I will completely lose it if Lowe screws this up.
This is his chance to make good on the Smyth fiasco and his other negotiating blunders. God help him if he messes up and Curtis isn't back next season.
GlenX has more goals than Smyth this season.............
I don't really fault the guy,I just don't think he's a winner and the Oilers need to move on. Hopefully Katz buys him out.
It's been repeated many times on this board that Buying Roli out doesn't solve any problems. The majority, or all of it (if i'm not right) still goes toward the salary cap.
IMO we probably go into next season with the same goalie rotation. Roli will be the back up and hopefully Garon can regain his form as #1.
If the Oilers would stop being so painfully mediocre, I wouldn't have to.
If you're pleased with 10th place and an early start to the golf season, more power to you, I guess ...
It's not a matter of being happy in the standings, but relative to (a) where we were earlier in the season and (b) at the end of last year. We seem to have a much better future from the look of things this year than last year. This team actually looks like it might be going somewhere rather than being mired in mediocrity. The emotion on the guys in tonight's game was really telling, especially with the kids and the 4th line.
There's a fairly positive attitude going on here, for a team who just got eliminated from the playoffs. Can't be blamed though. There's much to look forward to with this team, and I think we can all agree that they exceeded our expectations by far. The last two months have been a blast, and I can't wait for the 2008/2009 season.
BTW anyone thinking GlenX could be Scott Fraser part 2?
What a run it was. Roli sucks.. but really it was injuries that finally did the Oil in, as was the case the whole year. Garon coulda shut the door, and Hemmer was gone by the 3rd period. Hopefully no more injury bug next year.. once and for all. Good riddance.
