Don't Forget Avery only fights people his size or smaller

If i recall there was alot of talk around the HFboards earlier on in the season(around the time of his scrap with Kovalchuk) that Avery won't fight people bigger than he is. Well boys and girls that looks like it is not true. Eight fights so far this year(including pre-season) and he has fought most of them against guys bigger than he is.

Sean Avery Height: 5-9 , Weight: 195

Ilya Kovalchuk - Height: 6'2" Weight: 235lbs
Mike Richards - Height: 6' Weight: 192lbs
Darcy Tucker - Height: 5'11" Weight: 182lbs
Scott Walker - Height: 5'9" Weight: 185lbs
Patrick Kaleta - Height: 5'11" Weight: 195lbs
Marek Malik - Height: 6'6" Weight: 240lbs
David clarkson - Height: 6'1" Weight: 205lbs
Ryan Malone - Height: 6'4" Weight: 224lbs

Well, when you think about it, there aren't all that many players who are smaller than he is to choose from. He's not exactly a heavyweight.

i would assume avery won. and as for team unity here it is from Renney's mouth

“I like it,” he said. “It wasn’t malicious. It wasn’t stick swinging. It was within the rules of the game. We have to step up, so maybe this is the sign of a team saying, ‘That’s it. We have to be better every night."

yep, I like your post. I have not seen Avery really back down from bigger guys. It all depends on his mood. If you piss him off enough or if he feels the team could use a fight from him, he will fight anyone pretty much. I have even seen bigger fighters from opposing teams back away from Avery when he wants to fight...they just know that he is crazy and can beat anyone in a fight!

I'm also pretty sure that Scott Walker is taller than 5'9...he is at least 5'10(thats according to nhl.com).

So yes, its not always about size. Avery has a ton of heart and he does know how to fight.

I don't agree with you there. There have been a few fights where I wanted to scream at him. He needs to learn to stay to the inside, especially when the guy he's fighting is bigger than he is. That and quickness are the only things that are going to counter a bigger guy's longer reach.

I thought Sam Weinman said Malik manhandled him, I don't know about 'destroyed'.

I dont think it matters so much how many fights Avery wins to be honest. We have Orr if we really need to destroy someone in a fight. Avery is there to annoy the opposition, especially the top players like Kovalchuk. He does that VERY well. He is also very good offensively and plays with a passion that gets the whole team going. So even the fact that he fights and fights against bigger guys, that already gets the crowd going...its rare to see a smaller guy do that.

If he's going to waste his time fighting, he should at least go about it in a way that slants the odds in his favor, that's all I'm saying. Believe me, I'm barely 5'1" and I'm female, so I can totally relate to his plight. It sucks to be underestimated. But knowledge is power, and he should learn how to fight.

That is correct...but the haters want to have it both ways.

Bash him for not fighting guys his size or bigger...then turn around and say well, he's not fighting the heavyweights.

Your second point is what most haters are blind to. He's not a heavyweight and shouldn't be fighting the Laraques, Boogaards and Brashear's of the world. Leave that to Orr.

Most are so blind with their hatred that they just want Avery to drop the gloves with those guys to see him get his head handed to him. Which would be the most dumbest thing Avery ever did.

In terms of physical stature, Avery fits right in with the list.

From my opinion, I think that in his role as a pest... he sometimes has to back down. I mean, its gonna happen. Thats why they're annoying. They don't always back up their words... but they're effective (i.e. Kovalchuk). I see what you're saying, you can't expect them to fight a big man. But in the real world, a guy like that should expect to have to answer to anyone bigger than him.

So why some people knock Avery, I'll knock pests as a whole. Talk too much but really shouldn't. He's like that guy at the bar... Notice how the big guys don't really run their mouths. They don't have to

Whatever Avery did/say to Malik, it worked because he's ben played alot better lately.

From what I noticed, almost all Avery's fight are of players bigger than him.

But the Rangers are a better team when Avery is agitating. He turns some games into wars but when he does the Rangers tend to win most of them. We are a small team especially at forward and a number of them are a little on the soft side. They have to play harder when their opponents are angry and trying to nail them. So Avery fills a need for us--and his being a bit of a ham Broadway is probably the best place he can be.

Fixed one for ya. It's true, while Avery had gained a reputation as a turtler (see Darcy Hordichuck), he has been scrapped with bigger guys. However, some of the guys on that list are not fighters. Richards, Kovalchuck, and Malone may be bigger, but they are hardly known for dropping the gloves. Kudos on Tucker, Walker, and Clarkson though.

Avery is a middle-level fighter, but his antics sometimes attract the A-list guys. Anybody expecting him to throw down with a heavyweight is going to be disappointed. He might be crazy, but not stupid.

Malone is a fighter. Avery is the 2nd least tough out of Malone's 9 fights this season, as he's fought Cote, Clarkson, Jason Smith and Mike Commodore.

to me, though, the heights and weights of the guys he fights doesn't matter much, but if someone takes liberties with a teammate, he will stand up for them.

and I thought it was pretty funny that some comic strip on the Devils board portrayed Avery as being afraid of Vishnevski, when it was Vish who backed down from Avery, not the other way around.
