Jose Theodore's draft year

I was replying to a post in the NHL board about Jamie Storr when I stumbled across something that surprised me. In the 1994 NHL Entry Draft two goalies were supposed to be slam dunk top flight NHL goalies: Jamie Storr and Eric Fichaud. Storr just cleared waivers and we all know how Fichaud has just turned into an AHL goalie at best. As I looked at that draft year I was amazed to see where the top goalies ended up being selected:

1st round: Dan Cloutier, NYR (26th overall)
2nd round: Jose Theodore, Mtl (44th overall)
5th round: Marty Turco, Dal (124th overall)
9th round: Johan Hedberg, Phi (218th overall)
9th round: Evgeny Nabokov, SJ (219th overall)
9th round: Tomas Vokoun, Mtl (226th overall)
9th round: John Grahame, Bos (229th overall)

What an incredible 9th round. Those picks are often just a shot in the dark on Euro goalies. It looks like a lot of teams aimed well.

I agree. I was reminded of Vokoun when the Habs selected Halak this summer.

Imagine a Theo - Vokoun tandem if he wasn't made available???

I'm not sure but I think Montreal had a deal with Nashville to take Bordeleau instead of Garon and they would send Vokoun as extra thank you. EDIT, it may have been take Vokoun instead of Garon and we will send you Bordeleau.

All this while Reggie still thought Andy Moog would play another season for the Habs.

Actually it was the second way. We gave them Bordeleau as future considerations for selecting Vokoun and in turn protecting our other goalies.

I remember this draft real well. We wanted to draft Fichaud and the leafs took him before us so we settled with José. Funny How things turn out sometimes...

Fichaud did look good when he first started, who knows what might've happened to him if he were drafted by the Habs.
