The team one it twice in one year, prior to the NHL taking over and it not being a "challenge cup".

Stanley Cup (1893) > Habs (1909) > NHL (1917)

Habs > NHL.

If there are any skeptics, just go to the Bell Centre and count the banners yourself.

They won 23 in the NHL, 1 before the NHL was created.

Edit to previous post. Thought they'd one it twice in a year during the challenge days, but it was indeed a cup win before the NHL took over that the NHL is discounting.

First, you can't prove nothing with a Wikipedia link. Second the Wikipedia link says the Journalist is right:

The 1916 Cup was played on Lac St. Louis with snowshoes. They put the dogs in nets and it was reffed by midgets. That was how they did it back then and they liked it.

He's right & wrong. He should state 23 NHL Championships. We have won the Cup 24 times, the pre NHL one still counts as it was the same Trophy.

Exactly.

and counting pre-NHL, the CITY of Montreal, and all its previous and present teams, has won 41 cups out of (counting years with double championships) 111.

24 Montreal Canadiens (23 in NHL)

2 Montreal Maroons (in NHL)

4 Montreal AAA (pre-NHL)

5 Montreal Victorias (pre-NHL)

2 Montreal Shamrocks (pre-NHL)

4 Montreal Wanderers (pre-NHL)

.... Montreal has won 25 cups in the NHL counting the Maroons.

http://www.nhl.com/cup/champs.html

The two cups in one year happened in 1896, 1899 (Montreal Victorias and Shamrocks won both), 1902, 1903, 1906, 1907 and 1910. Which would count for 112 cups, but because 1919 was canceled because of influenza epidemic.

That's typical of KPD. He's a know it all clown and a complete schill for Bruins management. Whenever there was a story floated out in the media about a player being too greedy during the 80's-90's, it was his story and his source was usually Harry Sinden.

He actually posts on the Bruins board under the name Hub of Hockey if you want to PM him...

The Montreal Canadiens won 24 Stanley Cup. If he said that the Habs won 23 NHL championship, he would be right, but we havn't won 23 Stanley Cup.

The guy is a moron if he said so.

They probably played the trap too, but in those days it was an actual snare.

Yeah. Georges Vezina actually caught a trout in the middle of the game. That's a good trivia question.

The Detroit Red Wings do have 10 Stanley Cup, so perhaps one day they could pass the Leafs.

Well not the Habs as they will always keep adding Cups. But after 41 years, & what looks like another 41 to rebuild. Someone will surpass the Leafs, eventually....LOL

As long as Peddie is around... I kind of feel bad for them actually. They could have had Bowman and turned him down. Imagine that? Bowman has been the guy behind the scenes in Detroit all these years pulling strings and look at how well they made the jump to the salary cap era. Ridiculous to turn him down. Absurd.
