Fabian Brunnstrom update

Forget the National Hockey League playoffs. Forget the Steven Stamkos sweepstakes. With his season in the Swedish Elite League concluded, the Fabian Brunnström sweepstakes is officially underway!

Here is a new article about the swedish phenom.

Perhaps, Brunnström’s route on way to the National Hockey League can be compared to that of Alexander Edler of the Vancouver Canucks. Four years ago, Edler was playing for a senior men's team called Jamtland (which no longer exists) in the Swedish Division 3 league. Now, he has emerged into a premier defender and was receiving as much interest at the recent NHL trading deadline from other NHL General Managers as Brunnström has been receiving all season. Brunnström suggests that Edler’s success in North America has had a positive impact on him, and on any many others in Sweden.

“If he could make the NHL, maybe more players who play in the lower divisions can do it,” said Brunnström. “He’s showing the way and is for sure an inspiration for many kids.”

Cue the Brunnström to Vancouver rumors. All kidding aside, the Canucks, Red Wings, and Maple Leafs continue to lead the way in the sweepstakes to lure over the promising young Swede. And contrary to earlier reports, Brunnström has yet to commit with the Red Wings or any other NHL team.
He's coming to Vancouver.

could be a low cost top 6 winger the canucks need. i say offer him a rookie max deal, and see where the chips fall

The Leafs could guarantee him top line status, Mats aside...he'd probably immediately be their best player.

He needs time in the AHL, I doubt he could step into any lineup right away.

again, if the canucks use him in the Top 6 next year this team is already set for failure and another lousy season. Raymond, Hansen, and Grabner would be ahead of him on the depth chart at the moment, so he would have to play amazing in training camp to get a spot on this team.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if the only way we're going to get him is to offer him a one way contract.

With all the demand for this guy, he has all the power. It's not a matter of giving him a shot, it's a matter of him giving us a shot.

What's so great about this guy? Anyone have a scouting report? Which current player does he resemble the most?

If Vancouver wants to give him time in the NHL...by all means, afterall...I would like to see the Leafs get him and that more than likely increases their chance.

He styles his game after Marian Hossa apparently

One goal on youtube and Bob Mackenzie tossing his name out.

Not really and whenever someone sees him play in person they are left underwhelmed, as Dave Nonis was.

Apparently Daniel Alfredsson or Marian Hossa .

Brunnström is becomming more of a "Jared Staal - best of the brothers" type of story...

...and the fact that 10-20 scouts wanted to talk to him after every game didn't help a young kid.

I am amazed with all the Brunnström hype. The hype here in Sweden is nowhere near what I have been reading here and seen in NA based articled/magazines. He is good, he is talented and a latebloomer. But he is IMO not even close to being among the top forwards in the elite league.

Agree. Guys like Videll and Klasen (also free agents) for example are more hyped here in Sweden and they are just as good or better than Brunnström. I'm a fan of Brunnström, but the hype has taken monstrous proportions. He needs at least another year or two in the SEL or AHL before he's NHL ready.

Having no first hand information about either player myself, how would you describe Peter Regin's status as a player, compared to Brunnstrom. All I really know is that the two are about the same age, with Brunnstrom being hyped extensively, with Regin not so much, but, that Regin had a strong playoff with Timra.

I have a feeling he is going to be a NHL bust.

9 goals, 37 points in 54 games

24th scorer overall in SEL.

I dunno, is he really that impressive?

from what i've seen of regin this season, he's ready to compete for a NHL spot, but he could need a full season of AHL with some call-ups maybe.
i think he's closer to the NHL than brunnstrom. brunnstrom lacks consistency. he is pretty much burned out since january/february. he needs to play another full season of elitserien before even making the jump across the pond.

Considering he's subject to the entry-level system, I guarantee he's not getting it. His best hope is to get a contract that maxes out on performance bonuses, as if he was the #1 overall pick - but no matter what, he has to take a 2-way contract.

Remember that SEL is a very defensive league, when zetterberg played there during lockout he had exactly 1 PPG, Nicklas Backstrom had 1 PPG etc.

I wouldn't call it a very defensive league compared to other Euro leagues. I would blame those lower point totals on the players playing with that player. They just don't have the raw skill to move the puck as quickly for good chances.
