I think this is the highest he has been picked. He was in the MLD last time.

I'll gambool the guy I was going to take last round will drop even further, but this is a need pick considering I only have one center:

An elite checker and penalty killer for a decade, consistant offensive performer (5 of his 6 prime years he had at least 26 goals and 61 points, the outliers being a 21 goal season and a 57 point season), a guy who never had more than 45 PIMs once, and author of one of the more incredible seasons by a defensive forward, a 33 goal (8 shorties!), 43 assist campaign in which he was a just silly +61:

C Don Luce

Another guy I never would have given him a second look at in previous drafts, Captain of a couple Cup winners, and one of the original 12 HHOF inductees:

LW/RW Tommy Phillips

"Phillips showed himself to be a speed merchant on the blades and had no peer as a backchecker."

"Tommy soon showed superior talent in puckhandling and on-ice decision making that made him an unpredictable force to be reckoned with. Tommy could play both Left Wing and Right Wing, and had an unusually powerful shot to go along with pinpoint accuracy. His backchecking skills were exceptional as well."

Sounds like he should fit in with my team.

VCL sent his pick to me, and he wants.....

Alexander Ovechkin (2005-Present)

From Legends of Hockey:
Alexander Ovechkin was born September 17, 1985 in Moscow, Russia. The first round, first overall selection of the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Ovechkin honed his skills with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Elite League before making his North American and NHL debut in 2005-06.

Ovechkin, whose mother was a two-time Olympic gold medalist in basketball (1976 and 1980) and father was a professional soccer player, is a highly skilled forward who has blazing speed and does not shy away from the rough stuff.

In 2005-06 Ovechkin made his NHL debut with the Caps, leading his team and all league rookies in goals 52 and points 106 while capturing the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie.

On the international stage, Ovechkin has extensive experience representing Russia, appearing in three World Junior Championships (2003, 2004, 2005), three World Championships (2004, 2005, 2006), the World Cup of Hockey (2004) and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Named the Top Forward at the 2005 World Junior Championships, Ovechkin led Russia in goals (7) and points (11) and earned a silver medal, while capturing gold in 2003.

GREAT pick with Ovechkin. Right now, he is a solid 2nd liner, all-time, and perhaps more in the future.

Let me congratulate EVERYBODY for not choosing a third-year youngum in today's NHL before 335th overall in the 11th round.

I am proud of us all. We showed a lot of respect for the history of the game.

(AO was a fine fourth liner last draft and is a good pick as a greenhorn third liner this draft: still not deserving of cracking any top two lines in an ATD context; this draft went about where should be.)

See, now that is the fine line in these drafts. In 15 years Ovechkin is a top 30 player of all time (barring injury) but since he's only in his third year it is looked down upon.

This is about the HISTORY of the game not PROJECTING into the future.

Past Calder (and even a Hart) trophy winners have been panned in the ATD because of injury or other success shortening event in their life.

Anyways... congrats guys... no silliness this draft
