The allstate is about 12-15 miles from downtown (the Loop area not northern Michigan Avenue). Best bet is to take the blue line subway out toward O'Hare and get off at the River Rd. stop. They have buses from there to the arena (about 5 minutes)

Wolvesfan....That stop is the Rosemont stop on the blue line. Or if they wanted to they can go all the way to O'Hare and take a hotel shuttle to a hotel close to the arena, then walk the last few blocks.

Is there a way to stay in downtown Chicago and easily get to the AllState Arena on the subway or is it just too far and it would be better to stay in Rosemont?

Depending on where you stay downtown, the blue line subway that Axe and Wolvesfan mentioned runs through downtown. Very easily accessable.

It depends on what else you want to do while you are in town.

If you're getting on the blue line around the loop, say, Clark/Lake, you're looking at about a 45 minute ride on the L. Straight through to the bus, bus to the arena. Not a bad commute at all. I think they might've just finished some construction though (around the Milwaukee stop, I think), so it might actually be faster now.

It just sucks that the playoffs and my finals happen to be at the same time. I'll be home in time for Game 4 of WBS/Philly, but no Wolves playoff games this season. Bummer.
