thats true.
If thats the case I think that Carolina would.
From what I heard they were Targetting Kobasew at 2001 Draft. Also Gauthier would be good addition to Canes team ,since they are looking to move Vet like Boughner ( rumur only)
Also it is well know that O'Neill is available. So I think that they could strongly consider this offer

i cant see calgary doing this. They can barely afford iginla's contract, in 3 years O'Neill is going to be a 4-6 million dollar man, they expect to pay him that? i doubt it... they are better off sticking with kobasew and his small contract along with gauthier

I don't think they can get way better than that offer from the Flames. They might be able to get a slightly better offer but I'm not even sure about that.. Kobasew is a great offensive talent that looks to be a solid NHL player. Likewise, it was previously stated in this thread that Carolina was targetting him in his draft year. I wouldn't be surprised if Carolina accepted this deal.. Calgary simply can't afford O'Neill though and would be unable to resign him and Iginla. Trading for one year of O'Neill would definitely not be worth it..

That's what I'm thinking, but if that's the case O isn't going anywhere. If he moves, some team will overpay closer to the trade deadline. I'm looking at Toronto....

They can "barely afford" Iginla's contract? Please link me to the article where this was stated by the GM, or an owner. You cant because it has never been said.

Oneill will NOT be getting that kind of money under a new CBA. Very few players will see those kind of salaries unless they have consistenly good producing years AFTER the stoppage and when teams see what the landscape looks like.

Kobasew aint exactly "cheap". He signed a 3 year deal at near the rookie max (with bonuses) so sending him out now means they would break about even with an O'Neill contract in return.

But thanks for the education on all things Flame.

Has Kobasew hit all of those bonuses? I doubt it. It was mentioned in an article a few months back that Calgary was slightly over their budget. Can't see them adding O'Neill on to their payroll.

He will hit them by seasons end.

And how would they be "adding", they would be sending two other contracts out in this proposed deal.

Wow that is bad.

Kobasew has not looked great this year (I expected more) and Gauthier is a 5 or 6 dman on most teams.

On Carolina he could be 3-4 with Boughner gone,Kobasew may or not turn into 25-30 goal sniper with age.
All trades have risks but it's not a bad one for Carolina,if anything it's greater for Calgary IMO...but they need a proven scorer to take the checking heat off of Iginla (most nights he has two guys clinging to his jersey)

Kobasew alone would be enough, in my opinion. O'Neill is underachieving and somewhat expensive. Kobasew, from the admittedly little I have seen from him (4 or 5 games this season) looks to already be a solid NHLer with boatloads of scoring potential. In a few years, Kobasew should start really filling the net and on his way to a good career. Throw in a sort of young defenseman like Gauthier and the Canes should jump all over it.

The more pertinent question is, perhaps, would Calgary do it, and if I'm Sutter I'm thinking a definite no.
