He doesn't get "caught"... he says things publically that most players would be smart enough to say only in the room, on a team plane, or on the phone with a buddy. When he referred to Marty as "fatso" last night, he was doing a TV interview. I doubt he's the only player ever to make fun of Brodeur, or to make comments about French-Canadians, but he's the only one I can think of who was dumb enough to do it publically. I don't care what kind of a hockey player he is- and he's a pretty good one- until he grows up and learns to think first and speak second in public, I would not want him playing for the Habs.

Never said he was smart, or had class, but don't think for a minute the other players aren't saying the same things behind closed doors.

Oh, I'm not naive enough to believe other guys don't say similar stuff in private. And as long as it gets said behind closed doors and remains there, I don't care. But I don't want to see a guy who's dumb enough NOT to keep it behind closed doors representing the Habs.

Of course, given Avery's comments about French-Canadian players, I think this is all a mute point... I can't imagine Bob would ever sign this guy. The media would go

I think the op's original premise is fact challenged, and I'm not sure how a lot of the charges relate to each other.

Habs is rigfht in that there's a lot of crap said on the ice, but there are degrees though. I believe Avery goes way over any line that's ever been drawn.

My Dad always had an expression for certain players, how 'they had nothing to offer to the game'. I agree with that. The game matters. We take time out of our lives to analyze Koivu's broken bones, because the 'game' matters to us. It's just a sport, but it matters. You have to respect the game.

If the way Avery carries himself is ok, then it matters less, imo. The constant need for attention, through any sort of act he can dream up belongs somewhere else.

Sportsmanship matters to me. I like the idea of battling hard, then being able to look your opponent in the eye afterwards. Maybe it's not something that exists anymore, if it ever did, but that's competition to me.

If this stuff is considered acceptable now, I can't say that it's something I like a whole lot.

If he was some kind of useless player, I would think other things than now but, he is a solid 2nd winger, and he would be at this position with any team
And he love to get his nose dirty with goalies

the guy is usefull in the hockey game so let's just tolerate him until we face them in the ECF

McPhee I agree that you should respect the game, and respect yourself.

But on the other hand, characters like Avery get headlines, and that sells the game.

Trash talk, and walk, is part of all sports now.

Like Don Cherry said he met him as a 16 year old and his comments are "once an idiot, always an idiot"...classless.

If I'm Marty I don't shake his hand either, Avery was talking trash about his divorce (which was a bitter one) and who knows what else. It's one thing to be a pest and talk trash, but it is another when you bring personal life issues into play.

I'm sure if you did a poll in the Rangers dressing room "off the record" he would come off on the losing end of anyone liking his character.

Next year when the Devils play them for the first time I hope Clarkson does a number on him.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that one.

Great player. He should stay away from the microphone, but he knows his role and how to play it.

His role in 'The Rocket' was meant to be a pacifying gesture, imo. If he really had any angst against French Canadian people, he wouldn't have played a role where he gets his ass beat in a movie intended principally for the French Canadian audience.

Marty should have said "I got fat after all of my Stanley Cup dinners" or something along those lines. I'm sure Avery said dumb **** to Marty the whole series, i.e. about his wife's sister. Marty would not refuse to shake a guys hand just because he screened him like an idiot and bumped him a little.

Not everyone is as clever as Patrick Roy.

Pre-telling his son to punch out an unsuspecting goaltender of course.

I just ignore him. He rarely has anything intelligent to say, and you know he's just doing it to piss players off, so I ignore him. Of course, that's a lot harder to do on the ice, with all the adrenaline going (I know), but off the ice, he's just another face in the crowd.

Funny, stupid, good agitator, extremely ill manored.

That explains Avery for me.

I think he took that role, for one reason, it was offered. He wants into that world, had some connections, took advantage. I don't believe there was a philosophical or altruistic reaSON.
