Home Cooked Stats - Even Strength Points

I realize that nobody may really care, but this is just something I always try to keep an eye on - even strength point leaders. I find it's usually a very telling stat about who is actually producing and when, which I find useful in speculating on potential playoff scorers when there are typically fewer power play opportunities to be had.

At the all-star break, here's the way it breaks down (for the top 12 scorers) :

Player Name - GP, ES/GP, ES, PP
Jason Spezza - 52, 0.56, 29, 9
Marian Hossa - 53, 0.51, 27, 30
Daniel Alfredsson - 52, 0.50, 26, 29
Peter Schaefer - 53, 0.49, 26, 2
Bryan Smolinski - 52, 0.46, 24, 9
Martin Havlat - 42, 0.45, 19, 22
Todd White - 47, 0.43, 20, 6
Zdeno Chara - 52, 0.33, 17, 11
Radek Bonk - 52, 0.27, 14, 24
Wade Redden - 53, 0.26, 14, 18
Chris Phillips - 54, 0.20, 11, 3
Karel Rachunek - 49, 0.14, 7, 7

(GP = Games Played, ES/GP = Even Strength Points Per Game Played, ES = Even Strength Points, PP = Power Play Points)

The comparisons become even more pronounced if you account for total ice time in the equation...

Player Name - TOI, ES, ES/15m
Jason Spezza - 756, 29, 0.58
Peter Schaefer - 841, 26, 0.46
Bryan Smolinski - 843, 25, 0.44
Marian Hossa - 984, 27, 0.41
Martin Havlat - 710, 19, 0.40
Daniel Alfredsson - 1016, 26, 0.38
Todd White - 821, 20, 0.37
Radek Bonk - 926, 14, 0.23
Zdeno Chara - 1274, 17, 0.20
Wade Redden - 1352, 14, 0.16
Chris Phillips - 1131, 11, 0.15
Karel Rachunek - 994, 7, 0.11

(TOI = Total Time On Ice [mins], ES = Even Strength Points, ES/15min = Even Strength Points Per 15 Minutes Of Total Time On Ice)

And that table doesn't even account for players who see substantial power play ice time. Interestingly, Vaclav Varada would have registered a .36 (comparable to Alfredsson & White), Antoine Vermette a .27 (better than Bonk), Chris Neil a .26 (also better than Bonk), and Curtis Leschyshyn a .12 (better than Rachunek).

So what do these stats mean? Not very much, really. You obviously have to take into account variables such as the quality of the people that these players are typically skating against, but it does highlight to a certain extent which players are 'power play dependant' for their points, and who is getting the job done at all times during the game.

I'm quite impressed to see Spezza, Schaefer & Smolinski featured so prominently on these lists. I was concerned with Spezza at first, but he's starting to take on the role of a very steady contributor in all situations. A lot of people crap on Smolinski, but I think he's really come on in the past couple of months, and is demonstrating his true value to this team. He's a bit hot and cold, but has an all-round game and veteran presence on the ice that I think is invaluable. He's obviously also been a meaningful contributing factor in Spezza's development as well, which makes him doubly important.

I have to say that I'm most impressed with Schaefer, though. He's really taking this opportunity and running with it. I swore up and down when we traded Salo for him that we won that trade coming and going. Now that was probably partly because I always liked Schaefer, and probably partly because I came to absolutely loathe Sami Salo... but in any case, it's very rewarding to see him starting to realize some of his potential, and not make a complete liar out of me.
