TBAY drafts Steve Stamkos months before draft!!

Yahoo points out that Tampa Bay has begun marketing Steve Stamkos as if he has been drafted. They have created a website, Seen Stamkos, pretty much acting as if he is drafted and will make the 2008-2009. These are all very real scenarios, but you never know who will come to you with what offer and if Stamkos will be on time and take the step to the NHL.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/nhl...?urn=nhl,79348

Quote:
A WHOIS search on the domain Seenstamkos.com reveals the Tampa Bay Lightning as the registrant, and April 17, 2008 as the registration date -- 10 days after the team won the draft lottery and the chance to select Stamkos first overall this summer.
Quote:
We don't want to say the Lightning are jumping the gun, as Stamkos is expected to be one prospect that lives up to the hype. But this isn't the Dolphins signing Jake Long a few days before the NFL Draft; this is a hockey team building a marketing campaign around a player two months before he's drafted. Who the hell knows what can happen in two months? Sixty days ago, we thought the Ducks could repeat as Stanley Cup champions.
http://www.seenstamkos.com/

Thoughts? Atleast the Lightning have helped those mock drafters working with trades! haha

That's pretty funny, but not unexpected. Nice find.

I love it because it gives me a reply to trade proposals that won't get me warning points.

But seriously, the Tampa Bay area is very excited about this kid and there has been tons of talk about him when in past once hockey season is over nobody cares until training camp.

Besides, Andreychuk said we were keeping the pick the night we won the lottery so this isn't surprising anyway.

I don't know why they should cover up the fact. Suspense for TV or something

I agree. It's not exactly the most suspense-filled first overall pick in the world. Everyone knows Stamkos was going #1. He would have gone #1 to any team that won the lottery, but especially with Tampa.

They should probably start a marketing campaign as soon as possible. If they know they're taking him, go for it.

I think they have; that Stamkos website, I forgot what the URL is. One of the Tampa fans will know.

There aren't many suspense filled picks (I'd say the last one was in 2003 when the top prospects were seen as interchangeable), but when was the last time you had a team do what TBAY has done? There's nothing wrong with it, it's just unusual to seemingly close yourself off from some potential knockout offers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even Pittsburgh waited until the day of the draft to say they finally had drafted Crosby. Anything's possible.

Hope somebody has been auditing the T-Bay accounting records

(105-92--207) for the Markham Waxers Minor Midget team.

There was absolutely zero suspense with the Crosby pick, regardless of whether or not Pittsburgh marketed him. There's not a sane person on the planet that thought Pittsburgh would consider anyone else.

We were coming off of a brutal lockout, the draft was kind of half-assed, and many people hadn't "come back to hockey" yet.

The type of overpayment it would take for Tampa to trade Stamkos would be so grotesque that it would actually decimate the trade partner.

Yeah...that's why I think this is a little weird. It's not like I think they won't pick Stamkos but that's building up a lot of hype and putting a lot of pressure on someone who isn't even a part of your organization yet.

Then again this is the franchise that annointed Lecavalier "the Michael Jordan of hockey". But hey, at the end of the day they have a product to sell, which is what it comes down to. If selling the notion of Stamkos as a can't-miss phenom is going to make more people buy season tickets next year, then go for it.

Yeah, really. Failing to see what the big deal is, probably one of their more clever marketing campaigns with a mysterious "Seen Stamkos?" banner in the local papers. The prospective owner's been calling the shots since January, so I'm guessing he's decided already what's going to happen on draft day.

What pressure? He's not expected to be a savior, that's Vinny's job.

I don't like it, personally. I can't stand that that kind of stuff is done in the NFL, but I'm not an NFL fan, and I assume that's just how it works.

Would hate to see it in the NHL. It does put immense pressure on him, and I hope he's able to live up to it.

The Lightnings tanking was so bad, even the Penguins were impressed.

They shouldn't be rewarded for it and they certainly shouldn't be flaunting it like this.

They're shameless.

Does anyone else find this quote kind of...weird? I mean, a plus-13? Really, Phil?

Try being the worst team in the league since mid-December then having the #1 pick stolen right out from under you by a blatantly tanking team. Would you get over it then?

i think this is all overreaction. this site is likely being prepared for when he is drafted, not now. i did a stamkos search on google and this didnt come up. someone had to do research to find it. i think all your seeing is a FUTURE marketing campaign, which any team would be doing in preparation when they think the fan base needs a positive like tampa's does. if it was plastered all over their team page i would maybe agree with some of the dissenters. right now, it seems to like much ado about nothing.

They come up with a great sports metaphor for him, like "The Babe Ruth of Hockey" or the "The Tom Brady of the Ice". Something catchy like that.

you didn't get rewarded for being the worst. get over it. they have the lottery simply so teams like yours can't "fast for last" and guarantee anything.
