Top 50 UFA D-Men (Eklund)

Here's Eklund's look at the Top 50 UFA D-men, since I am sure a bruising, crease clearing d-man will be on Slat's wish list.

Top 15:

1. Wade Belak
2. Bryan Berard
3. Mathieu Biron
4. Rob Blake
5. Patrice Brisbois
6. Brian Campbell
7. Keith Carney
8. Chris Chelios (of course. safe to say Detroit)
9. Mike Commodore
10. Jasen Cullimore
11. Joe Dipenta
12. Mark Eaton
13. Jim Fahey
14. Jeff Finger
15. Rory Fitzpartick

I don't really agree with his ranking, but it's a starting point for discussion.

I almost fell down when I saw Belak ranked #1 then I realized the list was done in alphabetical order.

Torn ACL, out for 6 months, will spend at least another full season in the AHL.

Commodore! I'd be very happy if the Rangers could sign him.

Alphabetical order is a terrible ranking, I agree.

Heh, I just realized that myself, and thought the same thing about Berard.

That's a pretty weak list. We should trade for a big time defenseman, especially if we lose Roszival. We have the young forward depth to package some up.

Speaking of Belak though, what's he like as a player? I know nothing about him other than he's massive.

I'm warming up to Redden. I'd give him 4 years 22 mil. (5.5/per).

I've actually been impressed with the way Orpik has played in this series.

he is still young, and most of the sesaon, if you talk to pens fans, he was mistreated.....he was benched for no reason and when he came back he would play well and then get benched again....he is the missing piece to the defence and he plays against other teams best units......jagr's line, spezza;s line in the playoffs and he seems to be doing pretty well......

He doesn't list Orpik, who, IMO is the best option.

Not a bad thought. I think the Rangers really need leadership on the blue line.

I've watched the Avs quite a bit this year... Jeff Finger would be a pretty solid pickup as a 5/6 defenseman (although he played 3/4 most of the year)...

He lists him at #36. The list is in alphabetical order. He's definitely a guy I'd love to see on this team, however I doubt the Pens will let him go. They're short on defensive d-men as it is.

Agreed, but will the Flyers try to resign him? Also, wouldn't Redden be able to provide that leadership, as well as the offensive ability he brings to the table?

Orpik should be one of our top targets IMO. We desperately need someone on the backline who can intimidate opponents a little bit.

Sucks to hear Sauer won't be ready but nonetheless I think our defense should be revamped. Of all the FAs Mara is the only one I'd keep if we can get him for less than 3 mil. We have three relatively cheap guys in Staal, Girardi and Tyutin locked into spots and I would love for Hutchinson to re-sign and get a spot back there. The other two I would fill with FAs. Orpik long term and another one year deal maybe since Sanguinetti will hopefully be ready for 2009-2010.

You should cool your jets on Redden, he's Rozsival with a left handed shot. I'll pass.
