The Free Agency Question

A bit early, but we all know the difficulty the Canadiens have had landing impact, put-you-over-the-top free agents.

Like it or not, the high taxes, the pressure (surprise), language (sigh) and lack of a winning product on the ice have been identified as deterrents for UFAs to sign here since the lockout ended.

With a 104-point season and a solid playoff run, the team now has one of those obstacles out of the way. Is that on its own enough to persuade a high-impact player to sign with the Canadiens?

I think so. Any player who wants a long-term contract should be interested in the Habs and all their great young players, and a team who is all set for years to come.

Is there a list of UFA's somewhere? I'd be interested to see who's available

Yah, on the UFA page here at the forums... I like the defensemen, not so thrilled about the forwards. Maybe we could snap up a checking player for the right price (Holik got anything left? Avery maybe?)

Need more size up front, no more defensemen playing forward, a veteran backup goalkeeper, and more toughness.

How about Ryan Malone? I think that he would be a great addition to our top 6 who could add some much needed sandpaper while able to score some goals (27 goals in 77 games this year).

also brings nice size: 6-4/224

You can see why I'm not overly excited about choosing this year to chase a top forward. Hossa? Huselius? I know Hossa is a great offensive talent, but for $6/$7, will he solve the problems that we felt came to the fore in this year's post-season? I'd rather just role with what we have for now. Besides, surely we can't get him here!

I would focus more on Campbell/Redden and other top 4 D-men ideally.

I really like him too... Most of his goals were score right in front of the net.. Big guy who can play on the PP and PK.

I think Shanahan would be perfect here. Malone would probably want a long-term deal, but I think signing Shanahan for 1 year would be great. Helps out in the leadership department, willing to drop the gloves for teammates and will get his nose dirty to score goals.

Hopefully he'd sign in Montreal now, unlike two years ago.

Brian Rolston for me. I'd take Jagr or Fedorov on one year contract. Finally, Stephane Yelle or Bobby Holik for veteran presence and faceoff expertise. Nothing on defense really pick my interest.

I've gotta look closer at the list, but my first impression is that UFAs suck this year....

We gotta trade some of our prospect depth for what we need; or go with one year bandaids.

I think San Jose is gonna try hard to keep Campbell. Redden is not Redden anymore and I'm not incline to bet over 5 millions that he will regain his old form. Plus, I just don't think we can't afford 3 5 millions+ defenseman and Komisarek for the next 2-3 years.

Probably a long-term deal around $6-7 mill. a year is my guess.

Humm... He'd definitely be what I'd like instead of giving $3-4M to Streit. Almost looks like a bargain in that light. Then again, length of the deal they'd be looking for would probably be very different as well.

Anyway, just a pipe dream. I'm sure he's likely to stay in San Jose. Failing that, there will be a lot of competition for him come UFA signing period anyway.

Outside of Hossa and maybe Rolston, it's really slim pickings this year.

Gainey can gun for Hossa, but I'm not too hopeful.

Montreal has enough money tied up in defensemen... I think Campbell would be overkill. That and I'm not sold on his defensive ability.
