Same with Campbell... 6.5? No way. Hes looking at 7 and above with this years FA class. Even if thats the case, you have 6 players making 5.0 and above... thats scary.

The more i think of a team with Sundin and Jagr on the top line the more bile starts to creep up the sides of my esophagus.
Truthfully that is not my idealistic lineup either...I was just trying to make sense of the rumors by breaking them down. In the end, the numbers I used were probably a little light, but hey stranger things have happened. With the additions it definately addresses some needs, but again...the numbers are probably off a little.

In my opinion, our blueprint for next years roster should look like this:

Dawes - Gomez - ???
??? - Drury - ???
Korpikoski - Dubi - Callahan
Sjostrom - Betts - Byers/Orr

Staal - ???
Tyutin - Girardi
??? - Backman
Potter

Hank
Vally

Extras:
Prucha, Hollweg

Total (with dead space included): 35.534

Cap Next year: 56.3 (supposedly)

That leaves us with 20.766 mil (give or take, I rounded a few salaries) to straight-up sign 5 guys, or work out some trades.

I don't see Sundin fitting in there.

They can sign at that base with makable bonuses that COULD be rolled over into next year, IF the Rangers exceed the cap.

Are we sure the Rangers went over the cap, and Shanny's bonus were rolled into this upcoming season?

No, we're not, and I have a feeling we didn't. We only carried 22 players all season, so that must've helped.

http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.p...YR&season=0708 has us at $51.65MM, which is $1.8MM below the cap. Not sure if that counts deferrable bonuses or not.

Which would mean no dead cap space for the upcoming season.

Thats a lot of ???s. 3 top 6 forwards, in fact....and Dawes hasn't exactly proven he can be a second, let alone a first, line player. Without Sundin, I'd like to see who you think will become the ???s, and do an effective job.

Who's to say Sundin would do an effective job?

He produced at about a point per game clip on a terrible team last year. He would also definitely do a better job than who you named to replace the ???'s, which is noone.

Why? because you *think* he might mesh with Gomez??? Maybe??? More of these: ???????????

Because last season's stats would suggest otherwise:

Sundin: Age 37, 32G, 46A, 78P
Rolston: Age 35, 31G, 28A, 59P

What makes you positive that Sundin will mesh with anyone on this team? Rolston or Vermette would be a great winger for Gomez. Both play a similar game that starts from the defensive zone and works its way out. Any 'maybes' that can be applied to Rolston or Vermette can certainly be applied to Sundin as well, be fair.

You can pull as many numbers from the stat sheet as you want, but the bottom line is that you need to find players that fit not only Gomez and Drury's game, but the overall team mentality as well. If we're moving towards a defensive system, Sundin isn't at the top of my list of forwards.

would be nice but is he available... if he's as good as everybody is saying that wouldn't Ottawa just match the offer. and if not than we will probably be severly overpaying for him and giving up good draft picks.... that's a double whammy.

they have too much money locked up in spezza, heatley, alfie, the Buy out of Emery and Fisher. They also may have a choice between Meszaros and Vermette on who they will re-sign. Most likely Meszaros due to their Defense.

so what is their cap at? I have no clue what their situation is capwise. Also when did they buy out Fisher?

edit: just looked at their cap space. they have more than enough to Match Vermette.

Alfi's cap hit is only a little over $4mil... Emery's buy out is only $470k against the cap.

http://www.nhlscap.com/capnumbers/ottawa.htm

between those 5 guys it is about $23 mil.

now between Lundy, Drury, Gomez it is $21 mil...

they are in better capshape than us.

they didnt buy out fisher i worded it wrong i meant to say they have too much money put into Spezza, Alfie, Heatley, Fisher, and the buy out of Emery.

Their Cap hit for next seasons is 41 mil but they need to re-sign Stillman, Meszaros, Vermetter, Lapointe, Glass, Hennessy, Luttinen, Robitaille, Kinch, and Mapletoft.

I say we sign Sundin for a year, re-sign Jagr for a year, and trade for Schneider. LET'S GO FOR BROKE FOR A YEAR!
