What do you guys think of Shanny on the 4th line next year?
Assuming he'd be interested in creating a new role for himself.
He's still got some game imo. He's lost a little bit each season, but imo he's being asked to play too much. Maybe thats just a hard fact to face as one gets older.
What if he agreed to play the 4th line, PK specialist and some PP time?
Would we just miss the "energy" guy whos spot he'd take?
Wouldn't be awesome to have his leadership skills AND a bit of a threat on the anemic 4th line?
Interesting idea, but I'm not sure if Shanahan would do this. He could easily be a 2nd liner on another team for the same price. It really comes to down to what he wants, not what the Rangers want.
Also, a 4th liner making 4+ million is far too much.

he should be on the line that leads to the beer and hot dogs. that's it. having him on any line would grind the whole game down a deathly dragging halt. especially a 4th line.

He has to see his ice time really should be cut down. He's a smart guy. Can he be honest with himself? I guess we'll see. Does he want to sty in NY and play on a good team, become a real franchise vet. Set himself up for after his playing days perhaps.
Hes awesome on the special teams, Thats where he can still shine.
He could sign with some teams that might give him top minutes, but it can't, it won't be the Rangers.
how much of a cap hit are we talking about 1.8 mill...2.8 mill...3.?
the cap hit will decide it....
his leadership is good but the team won't overpay...
assuming Jagr retires the team still has to pay 840K$ towards the cap in Jagr bonuses....so the team actually has less cap space to work w/ than many prognosticators are predicting....>

Why would we assume that JJ is going to retire? He's 36 years old. He's not retiring. Thats ridiculous. I know the guy likes to speak in riddles, but trust me he is Sathers #1 priority.
Depending on how much $$$ he wants, I would do it. He's still got a shot line none other, he just doesn't have his legs anymore. Playing 4th line would give him ~7 mins/night + PP time. If he'll accept those duties for a reasonable price I'd jump on it.
Just have to remember that, at least during the regular season, Orr is going to dress most nights, so we're talking about a 4th line of Betts with Orr and Shanny most nights.
As "mouser" pointed out, its not a "high energy hitting/checking line," but I would go with that for the chance to bring back Shanny for his lockeroom value and his ability to play some PK, a little PP, and chip in some goals.
I don't see the value in using a kid in a 4th line role during the season anyway - it does nothing for your development to play 5-10 minutes a night.
And maybe you can move Freddy now - he definitely has value.
That is of course if Shanny were willing to accept that reduced role, but I tend to think he would. He fits this organization.
Anyone that says Shanny can't play is blind. If he took a 4th line job I'd give it to him in a second. Even 3rd line, I wouldn't question. That's not to say his 1st line days are over, but the guy plays a much bigger role that anyone on HF gives him credit for. Anyone that writes this guy off simply has no idea what they're talking about. What was he, 2nd, 3rd in goals on this team? I really don't see an argument here.
At this point I would rather give his spot to a kid. Besides if we keep him he'll end up back on the powerplay in the place of a kid who might actually help get it going.
